Traditional Varnish is an alcohol-based varnish made from a plant-based resin with characteristics very similar to Indian shellac, but with a softer yellowish tone. It is used as a quick-drying waterproofing agent for wood, plaster, MDF, ceramic, straw, or cork, or as an insulating layer between paint films in certain techniques (especially tempera painting), or as a fixative for charcoal drawings. It serves as a base for grout patina and oil paint. It dries quickly, forming a hard, strong, and flexible film. It is used in varnishing musical instruments as it provides them with a better sound than if they were finished with another synthetic substitute, and also in the application of gold leaf.
