One of the main uses of gum arabic is as a thickener and binder in gouache, watercolors, liquid tempera, and other paints used in art. It is also frequently used as a thickener and stabilizer in the manufacture of glues, stage paint, and other pigment-based paints, as well as in various techniques in the field of lithography and visual arts. In the various techniques based on the use of gum arabic, an aqueous solution of pigments is thickened by adding a gum solution until the desired consistency is reached. Upon drying, the gum acts as a binder, keeping the pigments fixed to the support and preventing oxidation of the pigments and the consequent change in their color.
