ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ebo Taylor

Ebo Taylor is a legendary Ghanaian musician, songwriter, and producer, widely recognized as one of the most important figures in the fusion of highlife, afrobeat, and jazz. Born in 1936 in Saltpond, Ghana, Taylor is celebrated for his pioneering role in modernizing the highlife sound, incorporating influences from American jazz and rich African musical traditions.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Ebo Taylor began his musical career as a leader of highlife bands in Ghana, before moving to London to study music. There, he crossed paths with musicians such as Fela Kuti, a friendship that would profoundly influence the Afrobeat movement. Upon returning to Ghana, Taylor dedicated herself to songwriting and production, helping to shape the sound of local artists and creating her own musical vision.

Albums such as My Love and Music (1975) and Twer Nyame (1978) stand out as highlife and afrobeat classics, featuring an innovative combination of African rhythms, catchy guitar lines, and powerful lyrics. These works established Ebo Taylor as a creative force in the African music scene, both as a solo artist and collaborator.

Despite decades of local success, international recognition only came later in his career. In the 2000s, Ebo Taylor gained global notoriety thanks to re-releases of classic albums and new projects, such as Love and Death (2010) and Appia Kwa Bridge (2012), which showcased his music to a new generation of fans around the world.

Ebo Taylor continues to be an inspirational figure, both for his vibrant music and his impact on the African music scene. His ability to unite tradition and modernity, creating a universal and timeless sound, solidifies his place as one of the greatest ambassadors of African music.
