ABOUT THE ARTIST

Pj Harvey

PJ Harvey, born Polly Jean Harvey on October 9, 1969 in Bridport, Dorset, England, is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer who has distinguished herself as one of the most influential and innovative figures in alternative and rock music. Known for her powerful voice, deep lyrics and an ability to reinvent herself with each album, Harvey has built a remarkable career that spans several decades.

PJ Harvey began his music career in the late 80s as a member of the local band Automatic Dlamini, where he played guitar and contributed vocals. However, it was with the release of his debut solo album, "Dry," in 1992, that he began to gain international recognition. The album, which included tracks such as "Sheela-Na-Gig" and "Dress," was critically acclaimed for its emotional rawness and punk energy.

The success continued with the release of "Rid of Me" in 1993, produced by Steve Albini. This album stood out for its sonic intensity and brutal lyricism, including iconic tracks like "Rid of Me" and "50ft Queenie." "Rid of Me" solidified Harvey as one of the most distinctive and courageous voices in alternative rock.

In 1995, Harvey released "To Bring You My Love," an album that marked a significant change in his sound. Incorporating influences from blues and gothic rock, the album was widely acclaimed and included hits such as "Down by the Water," "C'mon Billy," and "Send His Love to Me." "To Bring You My Love" was a commercial and critical success, establishing Harvey as an artist of great impact and innovation.

Over the years, PJ Harvey has continued to evolve and explore new musical territories. In 1998, he released "Is This Desire?," a more electronic and atmospheric album, followed by "Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea" in 2000, which was inspired by his time in New York. The latter album included hits such as "Good Fortune," "A Place Called Home," and "This Is Love," and won the Mercury Prize, further solidifying her position as one of the leading artists of her generation.

In 2004, Harvey released "Uh Huh Her," an album that returned to a more raw, minimalist sound. This work was followed by "White Chalk" in 2007, a dark and introspective album that saw Harvey explore new sounds with the predominant use of the piano. Tracks like "The Devil" and "When Under Ether" stood out for their melancholy and ethereal beauty.

PJ Harvey continued to defy expectations with 2011's Let England Shake, a politically charged album that explored themes of war and nationalism. The album was widely acclaimed by critics and won her second Mercury Prize, making Harvey the only artist to win the award twice. Tracks such as "The Words That Maketh Murder" and "The Glorious Land" stood out for their lyrical depth and musical innovation.

In 2016, Harvey released "The Hope Six Demolition Project," an album inspired by his travels to places like Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Washington, D.C. The album was created in part as an art installation, with Harvey recording at Somerset House in London, where the audience could watch the recording process. Tracks like "The Wheel" and "The Community of Hope" explored themes of inequality and social injustice.

In addition to her music career, PJ Harvey is also an accomplished writer and visual artist. She published a collection of poetry and photographs titled "The Hollow of the Hand" in 2015, in collaboration with photographer Seamus Murphy.

PJ Harvey is widely recognized for her ability to reinvent herself and to address a wide range of topics with depth and sensitivity. His music is often characterized by brutal honesty and a willingness to explore the darker aspects of the human experience.

Throughout his career, Harvey has received numerous awards and honors, including several Brit Awards, Grammy Awards, and two Mercury Prize wins. Her influence on alternative and rock music is immense, and she remains a central and innovative figure in the music industry.

With a career marked by critical and commercial successes, PJ Harvey remains a vital and relevant artist, whose music continues to challenge, inspire and thrill audiences around the world. Her ability to adapt and evolve secures her place as one of the greatest and most respected artists of her generation.
