ABOUT THE ARTIST

MGMT

MGMT is an American rock and electronic music band formed in 2002 in Middletown, Connecticut. Initially composed of Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden, the band gained notoriety for its unique style, which blends elements of psychedelic rock, electronic music, experimental pop, and indie. From the beginning, the band's sound was marked by a fusion of influences from past decades, including 70s rock, 80s synth-pop, and contemporary experimentalism, creating a fresh and innovative sound that quickly won over a legion of fans.

The band's debut album, Oracular Spectacular (2007), was a huge success, both commercially and critically. The album included tracks that became instant hits, such as "Time to Pretend," "Electric Feel," and "Kids," which became emblematic of the 2000s and helped define the sound of indie pop at the time. The band's psychedelic style and electronic arrangements, combined with introspective and often surreal lyrics, marked their unique identity in the music scene. Oracular Spectacular was widely acclaimed by critics and solidified MGMT's status as one of the most innovative bands of their generation.

In 2010, MGMT released their second album, Congratulations, which followed a more experimental and psychedelic direction, moving away from the more accessible sound of their first record. Although the album was well-received by critics, its commercial success was more moderate, due to its less mainstream and riskier sound. Tracks like "Flash Delirium" and "Siberian Breaks" showcased the band's evolution, with a more adventurous approach and full of complex sonic textures.

The band's third album, MGMT (2013), continued this trend of experimentation, with songs that further explored psychedelia and alternative rock, challenging the expectations of fans and critics. Despite being less commercial, the album was well-received by the band's fans, who appreciated its unique and daring approach. Tracks like "Alien Days" and "Cool Song No. 2" showed a band willing to follow its own path, without being bound by the conventions of mainstream pop.

MGMT continued to experiment with new sounds on the album Little Dark Age (2018), which brought back some synth-pop and electronic music elements, but with a darker and more introspective approach. The album was widely praised, being considered one of the band's best in terms of cohesion and depth. The tracks "Little Dark Age" and "When You Die" showcase the band's evolution, balancing their psychedelic aesthetic with a more polished and accessible sound.

Throughout their career, MGMT demonstrated constant evolution and a willingness to move away from commercial expectations, creating innovative and experimental music. Their ability to combine elements from various eras and musical genres, with lyrics that explore themes such as alienation, youth, and perception of reality, has made MGMT one of the most unique and respected bands in contemporary music. Their impact on the indie scene and electronic music is profound, and their legacy continues to be a reference for new generations of musicians.
