ABOUT THE ARTIST

Tim Maia

Tim Maia, born Sebastião Rodrigues Maia in 1942 in Rio de Janeiro, was one of the biggest names in Brazilian music, known for his powerful voice, unmistakable charisma and unique fusion of soul, funk, disco and Brazilian popular music. An intense artist on and off stage, he built a work that has become an unavoidable reference in Brazil's musical culture.

The passion for music began early, when he was still a teenager he founded the group The Sputniks, alongside names that would later make history, such as Roberto Carlos and Erasmo Carlos. In 1959, he moved to the United States, where he had direct contact with soul and rhythm & blues, decisive influences in the construction of his artistic identity.

Back in Brazil, he released the eponymous album Tim Maia (1970), which introduced the Brazilian public to a sound hitherto unheard of, deeply marked by North American soul. Songs like "Azul da Cor do Mar" and "Primavera (Vai Chuva)" became immediate classics.

During the 1970s, he consolidated himself as a central figure in Brazilian music, with albums such as Tim Maia Racional, Vol. 1 and 2 (1975), linked to the period in which he joined the Cultura Racional sect. Despite their controversial nature, these albums are now considered masterpieces for their musical strength and the authenticity of their messages.

In the 1980s and 1990s, he maintained enormous popularity, with hits such as "Do Leme ao Pontal" and "Me dê Motivo", while becoming known for his unpredictable temperament, legendary stories of interrupted concerts and his irreverent personality.

Tim Maia passed away in 1998, but he left an immense legacy: a discography full of classics and the definitive introduction of soul and funk in Brazil, forever transforming the country's popular music.

Today, Tim Maia is celebrated not only as a singer-songwriter, but as one of the most authentic and influential artists in the history of Brazilian music - a true icon who continues to inspire new generations.
