ABOUT THE ARTIST

Edith Piaf

Édith Piaf, born Édith Giovanna Gassion on December 19, 1915 in Paris, France, and died on October 10, 1963, is one of the most iconic singers in the history of French music. Known as "La Môme Piaf" (the little sparrow), due to her small stature and captivating presence, Piaf left an indelible mark on French music and culture, and is often referred to as the "Voice of France".

Piaf's childhood was marked by difficulties. She grew up in conditions of extreme poverty and was raised by her maternal grandmother, who ran a brothel in Normandy. Édith started singing on the streets of Paris at a young age to survive, until she was discovered by impresario Louis Leplée, who helped launch her career in the late 30s. It was Leplée who gave him the nickname "La Môme Piaf".

His first big hit came in 1936 with the song "La Vie en Rose", which became not only his most famous theme, but also one of the symbols of French music around the world. Piaf was known for her unparalleled ability to express deep emotions through her voice, touching themes of love, loss, and the struggle for survival in her songs.

Throughout her career, Piaf recorded a number of songs that have become classics, such as "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien", "Hymne à l'Amour", "Milord", and "La Foule". Her style was marked by intense and dramatic interpretation, which reflected the painful experiences of her personal life, including the loss of great loves and struggles with health problems and addiction.

Édith Piaf also played an important role in launching the careers of other artists, including Charles Aznavour and Yves Montand. Despite his untimely death at the age of 47, Piaf remains a revered figure in France and beyond, with his music maintaining enduring popularity.

His life was marked by personal tragedies, but also by an extraordinary talent that allowed him to conquer an eternal place in the history of music. Piaf is remembered as an artist who, despite adversity, managed to turn her pain into art, creating songs that continue to touch the hearts of people around the world.
