ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ray Charles

Ray Charles, born Ray Charles Robinson on September 23, 1930 in Albany, Georgia, and died on June 10, 2004 in Beverly Hills, California, was one of the most influential and iconic musicians of the twentieth century. including rhythm and blues, gospel, jazz, and country, helping to shape the sound of soul music.

Blind since childhood, due to glaucoma, Ray Charles began to learn piano as a child, showing a prodigious talent. After his mother's death, Charles attended the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind, where he developed his musical skills. In the 1950s, he began to gain notoriety with hits such as "I Got a Woman," "What'd I Say," and "Drown in My Own Tears," songs that blended the emotionality of gospel with the beats of rhythm and blues, creating a new style that would become the basis of soul music.

In 1960, Ray Charles recorded Georgia on My Mind, one of his most iconic songs, which would later become the official anthem of the state of Georgia. Another major change in his career occurred in 1962, when he released Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, a groundbreaking album that broke barriers by mixing soul and country. The success of this album proved that Charles was able to transcend genres and appeal to a wide audience.
