ABOUT THE ARTIST

Arvo Pärt

Arvo Pärt is one of the most influential composers of contemporary music, born on September 11, 1935 in Paide, Estonia. He is widely known for his sacred, minimalist music, and the development of a unique compositional style called "tintinnabuli". This style, which Pärt began to explore in the 1970s, is characterized by a meditative simplicity, where melodies are often built around diatonic scales and simple harmonies, evoking the purity and clarity of bells (hence the term "tintinnabuli", which comes from Latin for "small bells").

Pärt studied at the Tallinn Conservatory, where he initially composed in the neoclassical style and later explored serialism, an atonal technique influenced by Arnold Schoenberg. However, he became dissatisfied with these styles, and after a period of creative silence and reflection, he returned to sacred music and medieval and Renaissance liturgical traditions. It was during this time that he developed his tintinnabuli style, which became the hallmark of his work.

Among his best-known works are Fratres (1977), Tabula Rasa (1977), Spiegel im Spiegel (1978) and Passio (1982). These compositions exemplify Pärt's minimalist style, with an atmosphere of spiritual introspection that has resonated deeply with audiences and performers around the world.

Arvo Pärt's music is often described as deeply spiritual, and he is one of the few contemporary composers whose works are regularly performed in both religious and secular contexts. His popularity and influence are widespread, with his music being used in films, concerts, and ceremonies around the world. In 2010, Pärt was named the world's most performed living composer, highlighting the lasting and universal impact of his work.

Arvo Pärt continues to compose and influence contemporary music with his unique and spiritually resonant approach, while maintaining a prominent place in modern classical music.
