ABOUT THE ARTIST

Sade

Sade is one of the most iconic and influential artists in contemporary music, known for her smooth and sensual voice, as well as her musical style that blends elements of soul, jazz, funk, and R&B. Born Helen Folasade Adu on January 16, 1959, in Ibadan, Nigeria, Sade is the daughter of a Nigerian father and an English mother. As a child, she moved to the United Kingdom, where she grew up and eventually became one of the world's most acclaimed artists.

Sade began her musical career in the 1980s, initially as part of a group called Pride. However, it was as the vocalist of the band that would adopt her stage name, Sade, that she achieved international fame. The band Sade consists of Stuart Matthewman (guitar and saxophone), Paul S. Denman (bass), and Andrew Hale (keyboards), who, along with Sade Adu, created a unique and distinctive sound.

The band's debut album, Diamond Life, was released in 1984 and was an immediate success. It included hits such as "Smooth Operator," "Your Love Is King," and "Hang On to Your Love," which quickly catapulted Sade to global stardom. Diamond Life became one of the best-selling debut albums of all time in the UK and was widely praised by critics for its elegant fusion of soul, jazz, and pop.

In 1985, Sade released her second album, Promise, which further solidified her international success. The album included the hit "The Sweetest Taboo," which became one of the most iconic songs of the 1980s. Promise showcased Sade's ability to create songs that were both sophisticated and accessible, with introspective lyrics and impeccable production.

In the following years, Sade continued to release successful albums, such as Stronger Than Pride (1988), which included songs like "Paradise" and "Nothing Can Come Between Us," and Love Deluxe (1992), which featured the classic "No Ordinary Love," one of her best-known and award-winning songs.

One of Sade's defining characteristics is her ability to capture complex emotions in songs that are both introspective and universal. Her music often addresses themes of love, loss, desire, and resilience, always with a vocal delivery that is both powerful and delicate.

Despite her continued success, Sade is known for being a reclusive artist, releasing albums with long intervals between them and maintaining a private life away from the spotlight. This, however, has not diminished the impact of her music. Each new release is eagerly awaited and receives acclaim from both the public and critics.

After a hiatus of several years, Sade returned in 2000 with the album Lovers Rock, which included the single "By Your Side." The album was another commercial success and showcased a more mature Sade, with lyrics that reflected her evolution as an artist and as a woman.

In 2010, the band released Soldier of Love, their first studio album in a decade. The album debuted at number one on several charts around the world, including the United States, and was widely acclaimed by critics. The title track, "Soldier of Love," stood out for its innovative production and powerful message.

Sade and her band are also known for their live performances, which are rare but profoundly impactful. Their shows are marked by sophisticated production and an emotional delivery that creates an intimate connection with the audience.

With a career spanning several decades, Sade remains one of the most respected and admired artists in music. Her ability to create timeless music that transcends genres and generations ensures that her legacy will remain influential for many years to come.
