ABOUT THE ARTIST

Baroness

Baroness is an American sludge metal and progressive rock band formed in 2003 in Savannah, Georgia. Founded by John Baizley (vocalist, guitarist and also the artist behind the band's iconic album covers), the original line-up also included Allen Blickle (drums), Summer Welch (bass) and Tim Loose (guitar). The band is known for its sound that combines elements of sludge metal, progressive rock, and psychedelic, creating music that is both heavy, melodic, and emotive.

The band's first significant release was the EP First (2004), followed by Second (2005). These releases helped establish Baroness as one of the up-and-coming bands in the alternative metal scene, gaining attention for their unique blend of heaviness and melody. However, it was with their debut album, Red Album (2007), that the band really came into their own. The album was critically acclaimed, and songs such as "Isak" and "Wanderlust" became hallmarks of the band's sound. Red Album was voted Album of the Year by Revolver magazine, solidifying Baroness' status in the music scene.

In 2009, the band released Blue Record, which continued to evolve the band's sound by introducing greater complexity and experimentation. This album was widely acclaimed and further cemented Baroness' position as one of the most innovative bands in modern metal. Tracks like "A Horse Called Golgotha" and "The Gnashing" stand out for their mix of aggression and melody.

However, in 2012, during the tour promoting the double album Yellow & Green, the band was in a serious bus accident in the United Kingdom, resulting in serious injuries to several members. Despite the challenges, Baroness continued his career. The album Yellow & Green showed a more accessible and melodic approach, but still deeply emotional, marking a new phase in the band's career.

After the accident, Allen Blickle and Matt Maggioni (bass) left the band, but John Baizley persevered, recruiting new members and continuing to create music. In 2015, the band released Purple, an album that was widely praised by critics and seen as a triumphant comeback. The album balanced emotional intensity with sonic experimentation, with tracks like "Shock Me" and "Chlorine & Wine" standing out.

Their most recent album, 2019's Gold & Grey, took the band's sound into new territories, with a greater emphasis on sonic textures and richer, more complex production. This album was well received and demonstrated the continuous evolution of Baroness, maintaining the balance between weight and melody that has always characterized his music.

Baroness is known not only for her music, but also for her intense live performances and album covers created by John Baizley, which have become as iconic as the music itself. The band continues to be a relevant and influential presence in the alternative metal and rock scene, with a dedicated fan base and a career marked by resilience and innovation.
