ABOUT THE ARTIST

Sza

SZA, stage name of Solána Imani Rowe, is an American singer, songwriter, and producer born on November 8, 1989, in St. Louis, Missouri, and raised in Maplewood, New Jersey. Known for her unique style that blends R&B, soul, hip-hop, and elements of alternative music, SZA has become one of the most influential and innovative voices in contemporary music. Her introspective and emotional lyrics, combined with a sound that defies the conventions of traditional genres, have won over both critics and audiences.

SZA began gaining attention in the music scene in 2012 when she independently released her first EPs, See.SZA.Run and S. These early works showcased her ability to create atmospheric and ethereal music, with lyrics exploring themes of identity, love, insecurity, and self-discovery. In 2013, SZA signed with TDE (Top Dawg Entertainment), the same label as artists like Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q, becoming the first woman to sign with the label.

In 2014, SZA released the EP Z, which marked a turning point in her career. Z was widely praised by critics and helped establish SZA as one of the most promising new artists of her generation. The EP featured tracks such as "Babylon," which featured Kendrick Lamar, and "Child's Play," with Chance the Rapper. Z was a success both critically and commercially, and helped expand her fanbase.

SZA's true mainstream success came in 2017 with the release of her debut album, Ctrl. This album was widely acclaimed by critics and is frequently considered one of the best albums of the year. Ctrl is a sincere and vulnerable exploration of the complexities of modern life, addressing themes such as love, insecurity, empowerment, and the struggle to find one's own path. With songs like "Love Galore" (featuring Travis Scott), "The Weekend," "Drew Barrymore," and "Supermodel," SZA demonstrated her ability to create music that is both intimate and universal. Ctrl was nominated for several awards, including a Grammy, and solidified SZA's status as one of the most innovative artists in contemporary R&B.

Following the success of Ctrl, SZA continued collaborating with other major artists and releasing new music. She featured on tracks by Kendrick Lamar, Cardi B, Maroon 5, and was one of the main artists on the soundtrack for the film Black Panther (2018), with the song "All the Stars," alongside Kendrick Lamar. The track was a massive hit and was nominated for several awards, including a Grammy and an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

In 2020, SZA released the singles "Hit Different," featuring Ty Dolla Sign, and "Good Days," which were well-received by both the public and critics, further increasing anticipation for her upcoming studio album. "Good Days," in particular, became a major hit, highlighting SZA's continued ability to create emotionally resonant music that captures the spirit of the times.

In 2022, SZA released her second studio album, SOS, which was once again met with critical acclaim. The album further explored her personal and emotional experiences and demonstrated her evolution as an artist. SOS reaffirmed SZA as one of the most important voices in contemporary music, with the ability to create works that are both artistically innovative and emotionally impactful.

SZA is widely recognized for her ability to break down musical genre barriers, creating a sound that is unmistakably her own. Her music resonates deeply with a vast audience, largely due to its brutal honesty, introspective lyrics, and the way she explores the complexities of modern life. With a career marked by hits and a unique ability to capture the human experience through music, SZA remains a powerful and influential force in the music industry.
