ABOUT THE ARTIST

Wardruna

Wardruna is a Norwegian band of traditional and experimental Nordic music, formed in 2003 by Einar Selvik. The project is widely known for its deep exploration of Nordic traditions, mythology, and spirituality, using ancient instruments, evocative singing, and sounds of nature to create compositions that transcend time and space. Their music has attracted a global audience, extending beyond fans of folk or experimental music, due to its authenticity and emotional intensity.

Wardruna was originally founded by Einar Selvik, Lindy Fay Hella, and Gaahl (Kristian Eivind Espedal), who collaborated at the beginning of the project. Einar Selvik, also known as Kvitrafn, is the main composer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist, and the creative force behind the band. Selvik uses traditional Nordic instruments such as tagelharpa, lyre, flutes, among others, and combines these elements with natural sounds, such as the sound of water, fire, and wind, to create an immersive musical experience.

The band's first album, Runaljod – Gap Var Ginnunga (2009), was the beginning of a trilogy that explored the meanings of the runes of the ancient futhark alphabet. Runaljod – Yggdrasil (2013) and Runaljod – Ragnarok (2016) followed, completing this monumental trilogy. These albums not only celebrate Norse traditions but also reinterpret their meaning in a modern context, combining historical accuracy with a unique artistic vision.

Wardruna achieved greater international visibility when their music was used in the television series Vikings, which helped bring the band to a wider audience. Einar Selvik also contributed directly to the series' soundtrack, reinforcing the connection between the band's music and narratives about Norse history and mythology.

Following the Runaljod trilogy, Wardruna continued to explore new paths with the album Kvitravn (2021), whose title means "White Crow". This work delves into themes of heritage, nature, and spirituality, and was widely acclaimed by critics and fans, solidifying the band's status as one of the most important names in contemporary folk and world music.

In addition to his studio albums, Wardruna is known for his mesmerizing live performances, which are often held in unique settings such as churches and forests, providing an experience that transcends the concept of a traditional concert.

Wardruna is not just a brass band; it's a spiritual journey that invites listeners to delve into the rich cultural legacy of Northern Europe. With an approach that combines historical authenticity and artistic innovation, Einar Selvik and Wardruna continue to inspire and thrill audiences worldwide.
