ABOUT THE ARTIST

Behemoth

Behemoth is an extreme metal band from Gdansk, Poland, formed in 1991 by vocalist and guitarist Adam "Nergal" Darski. Known for their brutal sound, intense live performances, and lyrics that often touch on anti-religious and occult themes, Behemoth is one of the most prominent and influential bands in the blackened death metal scene.

Behemoth started out as a black metal band in the 1990s, releasing their first demos "Endless Damnation" (1992) and "The Return of the Northern Moon" (1993). Their first album, "Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic)," was released in 1995, followed by "Grom" in 1996. These early works were heavily influenced by traditional black metal, with a raw, pagan-themed production.

The band began to evolve their sound in the late 90s, incorporating elements of death metal, resulting in a more technical and heavy style. The album "Pandemonic Incantations" (1998) marked this transition, but it was with "Satanica" (1999) and "Thelema.6" (2000) that Behemoth solidified their signature blackened death metal sound. These albums were met with acclaim and helped the band gain international recognition.

The album "Zos Kia Cultus (Here and Beyond)" (2002) and "Demigod" (2004) continued to establish Behemoth as a dominant force in extreme metal. "Demigod" is particularly notable for tracks such as "Conquer All" and "Slaves Shall Serve," which highlighted the band's technical prowess and their ability to create intensely aggressive and complex music.

In 2007, Behemoth released "The Apostasy," which received widespread praise for its sophisticated production and composition. In 2009, "Evangelion" was released and reached new heights of commercial and critical success. The album included tracks such as "Ov Fire and the Void" and "Lucifer," showcasing the band's ability to combine brutality with melody effectively.

In 2014, Behemoth released "The Satanist," an album that was widely acclaimed by critics and considered one of the band's best. This album marked a high point in Behemoth's career, with a more atmospheric and complex approach. Tracks like "Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel" and "O Father O Satan O Sun!" exemplified the band's musical depth and innovation.

In 2018, Behemoth released "I Loved You at Your Darkest," an album that continued to explore dark and complex themes with rich and detailed production. Tracks such as "God = Dog" and "Bartzabel" stood out for their musical intensity and complexity.

Behemoth is known for its intense and theatrical live performances, which often include impactful visual elements and a charismatic stage presence from Nergal. The band has toured extensively around the world, cementing their reputation as one of the best live metal bands.

In addition to his music, Nergal is also known for his legal and public battles against blasphemy charges and for his writings and visual art. He has released an autobiography titled "Confessions of a Heretic" and has been a vocal figure in the defense of artistic freedom and expression.

Over the years, Behemoth has received numerous awards and honors for his contribution to metal music, including several nominations for the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards and the Kerrang! Awards. Their ability to innovate and push the boundaries of extreme metal secures their place as one of the most influential and respected bands in the genre.

With a career marked by critical and commercial successes, Behemoth continues to be a vital force in metal music, inspiring new generations of fans and musicians with his unique and fearless approach to music.
