ABOUT THE ARTIST

Apocalyptica

Apocalyptica is a Finnish band formed in 1993 in Helsinki, initially composed of four cellists trained at the Sibelius Academy: Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, Max Lilja, and Antero Manninen. The band is known for its unique fusion of classical music with heavy metal, having gained notoriety with the release of its debut album, Plays Metallica by Four Cellos (1996), which consists of instrumental versions of songs by the band Metallica, all played exclusively on cellos.

Apocalyptica began as an experimental project, but quickly gained popularity among both classical music and metal fans. Following the success of their first album, the band expanded their repertoire to include original compositions, such as on the album Inquisition Symphony (1998), which still retained some covers of metal classics, but also introduced their own compositions.

Over the years, Apocalyptica continued to evolve, collaborating with several renowned vocalists and musicians, including Ville Valo (HIM), Corey Taylor (Slipknot, Stone Sour), and Till Lindemann (Rammstein). These collaborations helped the band further diversify their sound and attract a wider audience. One of the band's most notable albums, Reflections (2003), marked a significant shift by incorporating drums and more rock and metal elements.

Apocalyptica's music is often described as powerful and emotional, with the cellos bringing unusual depth and melody to heavy metal. The band continues to record and tour, maintaining a loyal fanbase worldwide.

The band's lineup has also undergone some changes over the years, but Eicca Toppinen and Paavo Lötjönen remain active founding members. Apocalyptica continues to be one of the most innovative bands in the metal scene, staying true to its classic roots while exploring new musical directions.
