ABOUT THE ARTIST

Da Weasel

Da Weasel was one of the most iconic and influential bands in Portuguese music, especially in the hip hop and rap-rock scene. Formed in Almada, Portugal, in 1993, the band stood out for its fusion of rap, rock, funk, and electronic music, creating a unique and authentic sound that won over several generations of fans. The band's best-known lineup included Pacman (Carlão) as vocalist, Virgul as vocalist, Jay Jay as bassist, Guilhas as drummer, Quaresma as guitarist, and DJ Glue as DJ and producer.

Da Weasel began as a hip hop project in 1993, launched by brothers João Nobre (Jay Jay) and Carlos Nobre (Pacman), and quickly gained attention with their debut EP, More Than 30 Motherf**ers*. This early work reflected the band's hip hop roots, but as they evolved, they began to incorporate a wide range of musical influences, from rock to funk, reggae, and electronic music, which helped shape their characteristic sound.

The album Dou-lhe Com a Alma, released in 1995, marked the band's first major success, standing out for its energy and lyrics that addressed social and personal issues in a direct and engaging way. However, it was with the album Iniciação a Uma Vida Banal - O Manual (1999) that Da Weasel consolidated its status as one of the most important bands in Portuguese music, with songs like "Todagente" becoming anthems.

In 2001, they released Pode Fugir Mas Não Pode Se Esconder (You Can Run Away But You Can't Hide), one of their most acclaimed albums, which included hits like "Re-Tratamento" (Re-Treatment) and "Tás Na Boa" (You're All Good). This album showcased a band at the peak of their creativity, combining powerful rhythms with lyrics that captured the experiences and emotions of the young audience at the time.

Da Weasel's success continued with Re-Definições (2004), one of Portugal's best-selling albums, which included the mega-hit "Re-Tratamento". This album earned them several awards, including a Golden Globe. With Amor, Escárnio e Maldizer (2007), the band further explored their fusion of styles, maintaining their relevance in Portuguese music.

Da Weasel split up in 2010, leaving a lasting legacy in Portuguese music. The band's impact is still felt today, with many bands and artists citing them as a fundamental influence on their music. After a long hiatus, the band announced their return in 2019, preparing for a highly anticipated reunion show, initially scheduled for the NOS Alive 2020 festival, but which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The return finally took place in 2022, with a show that celebrated the band's career and cultural impact.

Da Weasel is celebrated not only for its music, but also for the role it played in introducing and popularizing hip hop and rap-rock in Portugal. With intelligent and socially conscious lyrics, combined with a rich and diverse sound, the band left an indelible mark on Portuguese musical culture.
