ABOUT THE ARTIST

Prince

Prince, born Prince Rogers Nelson on June 7, 1958, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was one of the most innovative, talented and influential musicians in music history. Known for his ability to blend a wide variety of genres, including funk, rock, R&B, pop, and soul, Prince was a true pioneer in music and popular culture, defying convention with his androgynous image, bold lyrics, and energetic performances. Throughout his career, he has sold over 100 million records worldwide and is widely recognized as one of the greatest artists of all time.

From an early age, Prince demonstrated extraordinary musical talent. Self-taught, he mastered several instruments, including guitar, piano, and drums, and began composing and recording music as a teenager. His debut album, For You (1978), was released when he was only 20 years old and already showed his ability to create complex and innovative music, having produced, arranged and played all the instruments on the album. However, it was with his second album, Prince (1979), that he began to gain notoriety, especially with the single "I want to Be Your Lover," which became a hit on the R&B charts.

During the 1980s, Prince reached the pinnacle of his career, releasing a series of albums that became classics. Dirty Mind (1980) and Controversy (1981) explored themes of sexuality, politics, and identity, cementing his reputation as a provocative and innovative artist. In 1982, he released the album 1999, which included hits such as "Little Red Corvette" and the title track "1999," helping him reach an even wider audience and establish himself as a dominant force in pop music.

In 1984, Prince released Purple Rain, the album that is widely considered his magnum opus. Accompanied by a film of the same name, Purple Rain was a smash hit both commercially and critically, selling over 25 million copies worldwide. The album included some of Prince's biggest hits, such as "When Doves Cry," "Let's Go Crazy," and the title track "Purple Rain." Purple Rain won two Grammy Awards and an Academy Award for Best Original Song, and made Prince an international superstar.

After Purple Rain, Prince continued his string of acclaimed albums, including Around the World in a Day (1985), Parade (1986) – which included the hit "Kiss" – and Sign o' the Times (1987), which is often considered one of the best albums of his career and one of the best albums in music history. Sign o' the Times showcased Prince's ability to combine a wide range of musical styles, creating an eclectic and innovative masterpiece.

Prince was also known for his prolific musical output. In addition to his works released under his own name, he wrote and produced songs for other artists, often under pseudonyms. Artists such as Sheila E., The Time, Vanity 6, and many others were launched to stardom with the help of Prince's songwriting. He was also responsible for creating some of the biggest hits for artists such as Sinead O'Connor ("Nothing Compares 2 U") and The Bangles ("Manic Monday").

In the 1990s, Prince continued to innovate and challenge the music industry. In 1993, in a bold move against his record label, he changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol, often referred to as "The Love Symbol", and began to be called "The Artist Formally Known as Prince" (or simply "The Artist"). This gesture was a statement against record labels' control over artists' work, and during this period, Prince released music independently, often through direct channels to his fans.

Throughout his career, Prince has explored a wide range of musical genres, from funk and soul to jazz, rock, and electronic music. His ability to constantly reinvent himself, both musically and visually, has made him an iconic figure and a constant innovator in popular music.

Despite maintaining a very private personal life, Prince was known for his intense perfectionism and devotion to music. He was famous for recording and performing incessantly, amassing a vast archive of unreleased songs, many of which have yet to be released. His live performances were legendary, characterized by his unmatched energy, charisma, and technical skill.

Prince continued to release groundbreaking music until the end of his life. In 2016, he tragically passed away at the age of 57, leaving an immense legacy in music and pop culture. Prince's impact goes far beyond his hit albums and singles; He influenced generations of musicians, redefined what it means to be a pop artist, and broke barriers in terms of gender and race in the music industry.

With more than 100 million records sold, numerous awards and a career that spanned more than four decades, Prince is remembered as a musical genius, a visionary and one of the most important artists in the history of music. Their contributions to music and culture will continue to be celebrated and inspire future generations.
