ABOUT THE ARTIST

Roxette

Roxette was a Swedish pop band formed in 1986, consisting of Marie Fredriksson (lead vocals) and Per Gessle (guitarist and vocalist). The band achieved massive international success, especially in the 1980s and 1990s, with their combination of melodic pop, soft rock, and romantic ballads. Roxette is known for her catchy songs, emotive lyrics, and the powerful voice of Fredriksson, who, along with Gessle, created some of the greatest pop anthems of his generation.

The band's first major success came with the release of the album Look Sharp! (1988), which included the hits "The Look" and "Dressed for Success". These tracks became international anthems and established Roxette as one of the most popular pop bands of the time. "The Look", especially, was a global hit, reaching number one on the US charts, which was a rare achievement for a Swedish band at that time. The album's sound blended pop with a touch of rock, creating a formula that would prove effective over the years.

The success of Look Sharp! was followed by Joyride (1991), one of the most successful albums of Roxette's career. The album was a huge commercial success, with singles such as "Joyride" and "Spending My Time" becoming chart favorites around the world. "Joyride", the title track, was particularly popular, reaching number one on the charts in several countries, including the United States. Joyride consolidated the band as one of the biggest pop stars in the world.

Throughout the 1990s, Roxette continued to release albums that maintained her popularity, such as Tourism (1992) and Crash! Boom! Bang! (1994). Although the band maintained a loyal fan base, commercial success began to wane, especially after the first half of the 1990s. However, Roxette continued to be a strong presence in the international pop scene, with her ability to create songs that touched the emotions of the audience and with a live performance that continued to draw crowds.

In 2002, Roxette took an indefinite break due to Marie Fredriksson's cancer diagnosis, but the band reunited in 2009 when Fredriksson managed to recover. In 2011, they released Charm School, an album that brought back the band's signature pop sound, with songs like "She's Got Nothing On (But the Radio)" and "No One Makes It on Her Own." Although the band continued to tour, Marie Fredriksson passed away on December 9, 2019, after a long battle with cancer.

Roxette left a lasting legacy in pop music, with over 75 million albums sold worldwide and a string of timeless hits that continue to be enjoyed by fans across generations. With their blend of catchy melodies, emotional lyrics, and energetic performances, Roxette remains one of the most beloved bands on the international pop scene. His contribution to the pop music of the 80s and 90s is immeasurable, and his songs continue to be remembered as some of the greatest classics of world pop music.
