ABOUT THE ARTIST

John Cale

John Cale is a Welsh musician, composer, and producer, widely recognized as one of the most versatile and innovative artists in contemporary music. Born on March 9, 1942, in Garnant, Wales, Cale began his career as a young classical music prodigy before becoming a key figure in the world of experimental rock. He is best known as one of the founders of the iconic band The Velvet Underground, where he combined his classical training with an avant-garde approach to rock.

Cale began studying classical music at the University of London before emigrating to the United States on a scholarship. There, he became involved in the New York experimental music scene, collaborating with figures such as La Monte Young and other minimalist composers. This experience would profoundly influence the unique sound he brought to the Velvet Underground, where he played electric viola, bass, and piano, in addition to contributing to the group's innovative arrangements.

After leaving the Velvet Underground in 1968, Cale embarked on a prolific solo career, beginning with Vintage Violence (1970), which showcased a more accessible approach, blending pop, folk, and experimentalism. Over the years, he released albums such as Paris 1919 (1973), considered a masterpiece for its lyricism and orchestration, and Fear (1974), which explored darker and more challenging territories.

In addition to his solo career, Cale became a renowned producer, working on albums by artists such as Patti Smith (Horses), The Stooges (The Stooges), and Nico (The Marble Index), solidifying his influence on rock and alternative music. Cale also explored film scores, avant-garde music, and collaborations with artists such as Brian Eno and Lou Reed, with whom he released the album Songs for Drella (1990), a tribute to Andy Warhol.

With a career spanning six decades, John Cale remains active, releasing groundbreaking music like Mercy (2023) and delivering live performances that showcase his ability to constantly reinvent himself. His legacy as one of the most important and experimental artists of the 20th and 21st centuries remains unquestionable, both for his impact on rock and his contribution to contemporary music.
