ABOUT THE ARTIST

Gorillaz

Gorillaz is a British virtual band created in 1998 by musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett. Known for their eclectic mix of music and animated fictional members, Gorillaz have broken through the traditional barriers of pop and rock music, exploring genres ranging from alternative rock and hip-hop to electronics and reggae.

The fictional band consists of four animated characters: 2-D (vocalist and keyboardist), Murdoc Niccals (bassist), Noodle (guitarist) and Russell Hobbs (drummer). Damon Albarn is the band's main musician and songwriter, while Jamie Hewlett is responsible for the creation and animation of the characters.

The eponymous debut album, "Gorillaz," was released in 2001 and stood out for its musical and visual innovation. It included hits such as "Clint Eastwood," "19-2000" and "Tomorrow Comes Today." The album was a huge commercial and critical success, establishing Gorillaz as one of the most innovative bands of their time.

In 2005, Gorillaz released their second album, "Demon Days," which was even more acclaimed. This album included hits such as "Feel Good Inc.," "DARE," "Dirty Harry" and "Kids with Guns." "Demon Days" was widely praised for its sophisticated production and its ability to address social and political themes through music. "Feel Good Inc." became one of the band's biggest hits, winning a Grammy Award.

After a brief hiatus, Gorillaz returned in 2010 with "Plastic Beach," an album that explored themes of environmentalism and consumerism. With collaborations with artists such as Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, and De La Soul, the album was well-received by critics and fans alike. Tracks such as "Stylo," "On Melancholy Hill" and "Superfast Jellyfish" stood out for their innovation and musical diversity.

In the same year, the band released "The Fall," an album recorded entirely on iPads during the "Escape to Plastic Beach" tour. This album was more experimental and received mixed reviews, but it showed Gorillaz's willingness to explore new technologies and recording methods.

After another hiatus, Gorillaz released "Humanz" in 2017, an album that reflected the tumultuous political atmosphere of the time. With collaborations with artists such as Vince Staples, Pusha T, Grace Jones and Kali Uchis, "Humanz" was praised for its relevance and sonic diversity. Tracks such as "Saturnz Barz," "Ascension" and "Andromeda" stood out on the album.

In 2018, they released "The Now Now," a more introspective and minimalist album, which focused more on Damon Albarn's vocal and instrumental skills. It included tracks such as "Humility," "Tranz," and "Magic City," and was well received by critics.

In 2020, Gorillaz began the project "Song Machine," which resulted in the album "Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez." This project consisted of a series of singles released monthly, each with different collaborations, including Robert Smith, Beck, Elton John and St. Vincent. The album was praised for its innovation and the diversity of styles and artists.

Gorillaz are known for their live performances, which often combine animation with live music, creating a unique visual and aural experience. His tours have been widely praised for their creativity and ability to engage audiences.

Over the years, Gorillaz have continued to innovate both musically and visually, while remaining relevant and influential in contemporary music. The band's ability to reinvent itself and explore new artistic directions secures its place as one of the most innovative and influential bands in music history.
