Death is an American death metal band formed in 1983 by Chuck Schuldiner in Florida. They are widely considered one of the pioneering bands of death metal, both for the impact of their early albums and for the constant innovation that has characterized the evolution of their sound over the years.

Initially known as Mantas, the band changed their name to Death in 1984. The first album, Scream Bloody Gore (1987), is often cited as one of the first death metal albums and helped define the characteristics of the genre, including guttural vocals, heavy guitars, and a lyrical theme focused on horror, death, and violence. The rawness and intensity of this album established Death as a key name in the extreme metal scene.

The band's second album, Leprosy (1988), continued to solidify the band's position as a leader of the death metal movement, while the album Spiritual Healing (1990) began to show an evolution in the band's sound, with lyrics more focused on social themes and a more technical approach to songwriting.

In the years since, Chuck Schuldiner has continued to push the boundaries of what death metal could be. Albums such as Human (1991), Individual Thought Patterns (1993), and Symbolic (1995) introduced progressive and technical elements to the band's sound, establishing Death as an innovative force within metal. These albums are known for their complex song structures, philosophical lyrics, and the technical skill of the musicians involved.

The band's last album, The Sound of Perseverance (1998), is often seen as the pinnacle of Death's musical evolution, combining the intensity of death metal with the complexity of progressive metal. This album included a famous cover of Judas Priest's "Painkiller", showcasing the band's versatility and Schuldiner's admiration for classic heavy metal.

Unfortunately, Chuck Schuldiner passed away in 2001 due to brain cancer, which led to the end of Death. However, the band's legacy remains hugely influential, both for the development of death metal and for metal in general. Death is often credited with taking death metal to new levels of sophistication and artistic respect, and Chuck Schuldiner is remembered as one of the most innovative and respected musicians in metal history.
