ABOUT THE ARTIST

The Stranglers

The Stranglers are a British rock band formed in 1974 in Guildford, England. Initially composed of Hugh Cornwell (vocals and guitar), Jet Black (drums), Dave Greenfield (keyboards) and Jean-Jacques Burnel (bass and vocals), the band became known for its unique sound, which mixes punk rock, new wave, post-punk and elements of electronic music. Throughout their career, The Stranglers have stood out for their bold and experimental approach, being one of the most influential bands in the British punk scene.

The band's early albums, such as Rattus Norvegicus (1977) and No More Heroes (1977), helped define the sound of British punk, combining raw energy and provocative lyrics with influences from classical music, jazz, and even French music. Songs like "Peaches" and "No More Heroes" quickly became punk classics, and the band stood out for its ability to blend aggressive punk style with more sophisticated musicianship.

In the following years, The Stranglers continued to evolve, moving away from their more punk roots and exploring other styles. Albums such as Black and White (1978) and The Gospel According to The Meninblack (1981) saw the band exploring a more experimental and synthetic sound, incorporating keyboards and elements of electronic music. The band's sound has always been characterized by a unique approach, where punk blended with more complex melodies and often deeper and more introspective lyrical themes.

Over the next few decades, The Stranglers continued to release albums and tour, maintaining a loyal fan base and expanding their sound. However, the band's impact was indisputable, particularly in the British punk and post-punk movement, influencing subsequent bands and maintaining a reputation as innovative musicians.

In 1990, Hugh Cornwell left the band, but The Stranglers continued to record and tour with new members. The group has undergone several lineup changes over the years, but has continued to be active to this day, with Jet Black being the only original member of the band to remain until the end.

The Stranglers are one of the most iconic bands in the British punk scene, with a career spanning more than four decades, influencing not only punk, but also alternative rock, new wave and electronic music. His music, often bold, experimental and full of attitude, continues to be celebrated by fans around the world, maintaining its relevance in rock history.
