ABOUT THE ARTIST

John Legend

John Legend, whose birth name is John Roger Stephens, was born on December 28, 1978 in Springfield, Ohio, United States. He is a renowned singer, songwriter, pianist, record producer, and actor, known for his smooth, soulful voice that transcends musical genres such as R&B, soul, and pop. Throughout his career, Legend has won numerous awards and accolades, including an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony), becoming one of the few people to achieve this feat in the entertainment industry. In addition to his musical career, he is also recognized for his social and political activism, getting involved in various humanitarian and social justice causes.

From a very young age, John Legend demonstrated an exceptional talent for music. He began playing the piano at the age of four, and during his childhood he sang in the local church choir, where he developed his love of gospel and soul music. Legend was homeschooled by his mother until he was six years old and proved to be a brilliant student, skipping two grades. He later attended North High School in Springfield, where he excelled academically and artistically.

After graduating from high school, Legend received offers of admission from several prestigious universities, but chose to study at the University of Pennsylvania, where she majored in English Literature with an emphasis in African American Literature. During his university years, he was involved in various musical activities, including directing the acapella group "Counterparts", which gained recognition for its interpretations of jazz and pop songs. It was also during this period that he began performing in Philadelphia nightclubs and collaborating with other emerging artists.

John Legend's professional career began to take shape in the early 2000s, when he met then-unknown rapper and producer Kanye West. Impressed by Legend's talent, Kanye invited him to collaborate on various musical projects, leading Legend to sign with West's label, GOOD Music. It was also Kanye West who suggested the stage name "John Legend", stating that his music had a classic and timeless sound that referred to the legends of soul music of the past.

In 2004, John Legend released his debut album, Get Lifted, which was widely acclaimed by critics and audiences. The album, produced largely by Kanye West, combined elements of classic soul with modern hip-hop and R&B influences. Get Lifted included hit singles such as "Ordinary People," "Used to Love U," and "So High," and earned Legend three Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Album and Best New Artist. The success of the album established him as one of the most prominent voices in contemporary soul music.

Following the success of his debut album, Legend continued to cement his career with subsequent releases, including Once Again (2006), which featured the hit single "Save Room", and Evolver (2008), which included the popular song "Green Light" in collaboration with André 3000. In 2013, he released the album Love in the Future, which contained one of his biggest commercial hits, "All of Me". The romantic ballad became a global phenomenon, reaching the top of the music charts in several countries and becoming one of the most played and sold songs of that year.

In addition to his solo career, John Legend is known for his collaborations with a variety of artists from different genres. He has contributed to songs by artists such as Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, Lauryn Hill, and The Roots. In 2010, he collaborated with The Roots on the album Wake Up!, which featured versions of soul and R&B songs from the 1960s and 1970s with social and political themes. The album was critically praised and won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album.

John Legend has also expanded his talent beyond music, venturing into the world of acting and producing. In 2015, he won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for the song "Glory", written in partnership with Common for the film Selma, which portrays the struggle for civil rights in the United States. In 2017, he starred in the television production Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, for which he won an Emmy Award, thus completing his EGOT. Legend also participated as a mentor and judge on the popular musical talent show The Voice, where he demonstrated his commitment to supporting and mentoring new musical talent.

Outside the world of entertainment, John Legend is an activist committed to various social causes. He has been an active advocate for criminal justice reform, education, civil rights, and racial equality. He founded the non-profit organization "Show Me Campaign", which aims to fight poverty and promote access to quality education. Legend has also been vocal on political issues, supporting candidates and policies that promote social justice and equality.

In his personal life, John Legend has been married to model and television personality Chrissy Teigen since 2013. The couple is known for their charismatic presence on social media and their involvement in various charitable causes. Together, they have children and often share aspects of their family life with the public, winning the admiration of fans around the world.

With a career marked by musical successes, prestigious recognitions, and a deep commitment to social issues, John Legend continues to be an influential figure in contemporary popular culture. His music, characterized by a combination of exceptional vocal ability, emotive songwriting, and social awareness, continues to resonate with global audiences, solidifying his legacy as one of the most important and versatile artists of his generation.
