ABOUT THE ARTIST

Swans

Swans is an experimental rock band formed in 1982 in New York City, led by Michael Gira, the only constant member throughout the band's history. Swans is known for its intense music, which blends elements of rock, noise, industrial, and avant-garde, and for its ability to create dense and often challenging sonic atmospheres. The band has had several distinct lineups and phases, but has always maintained a radical and innovative approach to music.

In their early years, Swans' music was characterized by a heavy, repetitive sound, influenced by post-punk and no wave, with an emphasis on slow rhythms and industrial percussion. Albums such as Filth (1983) and Cop (1984) are examples of this early period, marked by a raw and brutal sound that expressed themes of alienation, power, and despair.

From the late 1980s onwards, the band began to incorporate more melodic and atmospheric elements into their music, especially with the album Children of God (1987), which marked a significant shift in Swans' sound. This album combined the intensity of their earlier works with influences from folk, gothic, and choral music, introducing the voice of Jarboe, who became a central figure in the band during this period. Swans' music became more diverse and emotionally rich, exploring themes of spirituality and redemption.

Despite growing success, the band decided to cease activities in 1997 after the release of the album Soundtracks for the Blind. However, in 2010, Michael Gira reactivated Swans with a new album, My Father Will Guide Me up a Rope to the Sky, which was followed by a series of acclaimed albums such as The Seer (2012), To Be Kind (2014), and The Glowing Man (2016). These albums continued to explore the boundaries of experimental music, with long tracks combining elements of drone, post-rock, and neoclassical, creating epic and hypnotic soundscapes.

Swans are also known for their intense and often physically demanding live performances, both for the band and the audience. Their performances are characterized by overwhelming energy and the creation of an immersive, almost transcendental sonic experience.

With a career spanning several decades and continuing to evolve, Swans remains one of the most respected and influential bands in the experimental music scene. Their willingness to challenge and redefine the boundaries of music continues to inspire new generations of musicians and captivate audiences with their artistic depth and unwavering integrity.
