ABOUT THE ARTIST

Black Flag

Black Flag is an American hardcore punk band formed in 1976 in Hermosa Beach, California. Founded by guitarist Greg Ginn, the band is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of hardcore punk, influencing generations of musicians with its aggressive sound, DIY ethic, and lyrics that address themes such as alienation, anger, and social resistance. The iconic logo of four black bars has become a universal symbol of punk.

The debut album, Damaged (1981), with Henry Rollins as vocalist, is considered one of the most important punk rock records. Tracks like "Rise Above" and "TV Party" captured the essence of youthful aggression and angst, establishing Black Flag as a dominant force in the hardcore scene. Rollins' visceral delivery and Ginn's edgy riffs became trademarks of the band.

The band has faced several lineup changes over the years, with previous vocalists such as Keith Morris (founder of the band and later a member of Circle Jerks) and Ron Reyes, as well as Henry Rollins, who became the most recognizable face of Black Flag. Despite the changes, Ginn's raw energy and artistic vision have kept the group cohesive.

Black Flag explored new musical territories throughout their career, incorporating elements of jazz, noise, and sludge on albums like My War (1984) and Slip It In (1984). This evolution helped expand the boundaries of hardcore punk, but also generated mixed reactions among more purist fans.

Despite internal conflicts and several breakups, Black Flag remains a seminal figure in punk rock. The band has reunited in different formations over the years, with Greg Ginn leading recent projects. Black Flag's impact transcends music, representing the DIY spirit and rebellion that defines the punk ethos.
