ABOUT THE ARTIST

Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Unknown Mortal Orchestra (UMO) is a psychedelic rock band formed in 2010 in Portland, Oregon, United States, and led by Ruban Nielson, a New Zealand-born musician and producer. The band is known for its unique blend of lo-fi, psychedelic, and funk rock, with influences ranging from soul and R&B from the '70s to experimental rock.

The project began as a solo effort by Ruban Nielson after the dissolution of his previous band, The Mint Chicks. UMO's first single, "Ffunny Ffrends," was released anonymously on Bandcamp in 2010 and quickly gained attention in the music blogosphere. The track's success led to the signing of a contract with Fat Possum Records, and the release of the self-titled debut album, Unknown Mortal Orchestra (2011).

The debut album was well received by critics and audiences, standing out for its lo-fi sound and catchy melodies, which mixed psychedelic influences with a modern and intimate production. Songs like "Ffunny Ffrends" and "How Can You Luv Me" helped establish the band as one of the emerging forces in the indie rock scene.

With their second album, II (2013), UMO continued to evolve, exploring deeper and more introspective themes, while expanding their sonic palette. The single "So Good at Being in Trouble" exemplifies the melancholic and psychedelic sound that has become characteristic of the band. The album was widely praised, cementing UMO's status as one of the most creative bands of their generation.

Subsequent albums, Multi-Love (2015) and Sex & Food (2018), continued to explore new musical directions, incorporating elements of funk, disco, and even electronic music. Multi-Love, in particular, has received acclaim for its exploration of love and polyamory themes, with richer and more diverse production.

In 2023, the band released the album V, which continues the band's experimental trajectory, blending global sounds and influences with Ruban Nielson's signature psychedelic.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra is celebrated for its ability to merge the past and present, creating a sound that is both nostalgic and innovative. The band continues to influence indie music and maintain a dedicated fan base around the world.
