ABOUT THE ARTIST

Whitesnake

Whitesnake is a British hard rock band formed in 1978 by David Coverdale, former lead singer of the band Deep Purple. The band is known for its powerful sound that mixes hard rock, blues, and heavy metal, as well as epic ballads and striking guitar riffs. Whitesnake achieved great commercial success in the 80s, becoming one of the most iconic rock bands of that decade. David Coverdale, with his distinctive voice and stage charisma, is the centerpiece of the band, which has gone through several lineup changes over the years.

Whitesnake began as a solo project by David Coverdale after his departure from Deep Purple in 1976. Coverdale released two solo albums before forming Whitesnake as a full band. The band's first album, Trouble (1978), featured a mix of heavy rock and blues, with songs like "Take Me With You" and "Lie Down (A Modern Love Song)" standing out. Whitesnake's sound in this period was heavily influenced by blues rock, with Coverdale exploring his musical roots.

In the following years, Whitesnake released a number of albums that helped establish their reputation in the European rock scene, including Lovehunter (1979), Ready an' Willing (1980) and Come an' Get It (1981). These albums were well received, especially in the UK, and featured hits such as "Fool for Your Loving" and "Don't Break My Heart Again". The album Ready an' Willing also included "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City", a cover that became one of the band's anthems.

The band's real international success came in 1984 with the album Slide It In. This album marked a significant change in Whitesnake's sound, with more polished production and a greater emphasis on guitar riffs and melodic hooks. Songs like "Love Ain't No Stranger" and the title track "Slide It In" helped the band reach a wider audience, especially in the United States.

Whitesnake's peak of popularity came in 1987 with the release of the eponymous album Whitesnake (known as 1987 in Europe). This album was a smash hit, selling millions of copies worldwide and spawning several hit singles, including "Here I Go Again," "Is This Love," and "Still of the Night." "Here I Go Again", in particular, became one of the biggest hits of the 80s and is, to this day, the song most associated with the band. Whitesnake's sound on this album was heavily influenced by glam metal, with highly commercial production and music videos that have become iconic in the MTV era.

In 1989, Whitesnake released Slip of the Tongue, which continued the band's commercial success, although it did not achieve the same level of success as the previous album. This album included the participation of virtuoso guitarist Steve Vai, who brought a new dimension to the band's sound. Singles such as "Fool for Your Loving" (covered from the album Ready an' Willing) and "The Deeper the Love" kept the band on the charts, but frequent lineup changes began to create challenges to the group's stability.

After a break in the early 1990s, Whitesnake returned in 1997 with the album Restless Heart, which featured a more mature and introspective sound, but failed to replicate the commercial success of previous albums. Over the next few decades, the band released several studio and live albums, including Good to Be Bad (2008) and Flesh & Blood (2019), which showed that Whitesnake continued to be a relevant force in the rock world.

Whitesnake is also known for its live performances, with David Coverdale leading the band on tours that continue to draw crowds around the world. His music, with a combination of powerful rock anthems and soulful ballads, left a lasting legacy in hard rock and heavy metal.

Today, Whitesnake is recognized as one of rock's classic bands, with a discography that includes some of the biggest hits of the 1980s. The band's ability to reinvent itself over the years, while maintaining its essence and characteristic energy, has made it a constant and influential presence in the history of rock. David Coverdale, in particular, remains one of the most iconic and respected voices in the genre.
