ABOUT THE ARTIST

Within Temptation

Within Temptation is a Dutch symphonic metal band formed in 1996 by Sharon den Adel (vocalist) and Robert Westerholt (guitarist). The band is known for combining elements of metal, gothic rock, and symphonic music, creating an epic and dramatic sound that is both heavy and melodic. Sharon den Adel's powerful and emotional vocals, along with orchestral arrangements and heavy guitars, have made the band one of the most popular in the symphonic metal genre.

The band's first album, Enter (1997), featured a sound closer to doom metal and gothic metal, with a dark and introspective atmosphere. However, it was with the album Mother Earth (2000) that Within Temptation began to achieve greater success and international recognition. This album, with tracks like "Ice Queen" and "Mother Earth," showed an evolution towards a more accessible and melodic sound, incorporating elements of folk and orchestral music, which quickly led them to success on the European charts.

In 2004, the band released The Silent Force, which marked a new phase in their career, with a more polished sound and high-quality production. The single "Stand My Ground" became one of the band's biggest hits, helping to solidify their presence on the global scene. The Heart of Everything (2007) followed this path, with singles like "What Have You Done," which featured Keith Caputo (now Mina Caputo), vocalist of Life of Agony. This album helped the band break into the North American market and was well-received by critics.

Throughout the following decade, Within Temptation continued to evolve their sound. The Unforgiving (2011) introduced hard rock and pop influences while remaining true to their symphonic roots. This concept album was accompanied by a series of comics and short films, reflecting the band's artistic ambition. On Hydra (2014), the band experimented even further, collaborating with artists from different genres, including Tarja Turunen, formerly of Nightwish, and rapper Xzibit, demonstrating their willingness to expand the boundaries of symphonic metal.

In 2019, the band released Resist, an album that reflects contemporary themes such as the fight for freedom and the impact of technology on society. The album features a more modern and aggressive sound, but maintains the grand and epic style that characterizes the band.

Within Temptation is one of the most influential and successful symphonic metal bands, with a dedicated fanbase worldwide. Their ability to combine emotional intensity with grandiose arrangements and profound lyrics has made them an iconic name within the genre, and the band continues to innovate and explore new musical avenues with each release.
