ABOUT THE ARTIST

Calexico

Calexico is an American band formed in Tucson, Arizona, in 1996. The band was founded by Joey Burns (vocals, guitar, bass) and John Convertino (drums, percussion), both former members of the indie rock band Giant Sand. Calexico is known for its unique fusion of musical styles, which includes elements of alternative rock, Mexican music, folk, jazz, country, and Latin music. The band has been widely acclaimed for its ability to blend these diverse styles to create a distinctive and atmospheric sound that evokes the landscapes of the southwestern United States and Mexico.

The name "Calexico" is inspired by the border town of Calexico, located in California, near the border with Mexico. This name reflects the essence of the band, which explores themes of borderland, immigration, and hybrid culture, both in its lyrics and music. Since its inception, Calexico has been a prolific band, releasing several studio albums, EPs, collaborations, and live albums.

Calexico's debut album, Spoke, was released in 1997 and established the band's signature sound, which combines traditional Mexican instrumentation with elements of alternative rock and experimental music. This album was followed by The Black Light (1998), which further expanded the band's sound and included songs that evoke the desert landscape and culture of the southwestern United States. The Black Light was critically acclaimed and helped the band gain a dedicated fanbase.

Over the years, Calexico has continued to evolve and experiment with new sounds and collaborations. Albums like Feast of Wire (2003) and Carried to Dust (2008) stand out for their complexity and the way the band manages to incorporate different musical styles into their compositions. Feast of Wire, in particular, was widely praised by critics and is often considered one of the band's best albums. This album includes tracks like "Quattro (World Drifts In)" and "Black Heart," which exemplify the unique fusion of sounds and influences that characterizes Calexico's music.

In addition to their studio albums, Calexico is known for their collaborations with other artists and bands, as well as their contributions to film soundtracks. The band has collaborated with artists such as Iron & Wine, Neko Case, and Willie Nelson, and their music has been used in numerous films and television series.

Calexico's sound, which blends Mexican influences with alternative rock and other genres, has made them one of the most respected bands in the indie rock scene. The band continues to release new music and tour, maintaining a loyal fanbase and constantly expanding their musical horizons. With a career spanning more than two decades, Calexico remains an innovative force in contemporary music.
