ABOUT THE ARTIST

Low

Low was a band formed in 1993 in Duluth, Minnesota by musicians Alan Sparhawk (guitar and vocals) and Mimi Parker (drums and vocals), later joined by different bassists throughout their career, with Steve Garrington being the most enduring. From the beginning, the group stood out for its minimalist and contemplative approach, which would come to be associated with the term slowcore.

Kramer's debut album, I Could Live in Hope (1994), established the band's signature aesthetic: slow songs, arrangements stripped down to the essentials, and an emotional intensity built on delicacy rather than strength. This discreet but deeply expressive record distinguished Low from the explosion of alternative rock in the 90s, winning over a loyal and attentive critical audience.

Over the decades, the band's discography has expanded in subtle but consistent directions. Albums such as Secret Name (1999), Things We Lost in the Fire (2001) and The Great Destroyer (2005) revealed Low's ability to maintain his essence while incorporating new textures, from orchestral arrangements to more distorted guitars.

In the 2010s, the group renewed its sound with works such as C'mon (2011) and Ones and Sixes (2015), but it was with Double Negative (2018) that Low reached a point of radical reinvention. The album presented a fragmented, almost abstract aesthetic, where the voices of Sparhawk and Parker emerge as beacons of humanity amidst digital noises and distorted landscapes. In 2021, Hey What continued this line, being widely acclaimed as one of his masterpieces.

In addition to music, Low has always stood out for the vocal harmony of Alan and Mimi, a couple on and off stage, whose emotional complicity was central to the band's identity. The death of Mimi Parker in 2022 from cancer marked an inevitable end for the group, leaving a legacy of nearly three decades of unique musical creation.

Low remains one of the most important bands in American alternative music, an unavoidable reference for slowcore and for all those who believe in the power of delicacy, silence and vulnerability as transformative artistic forces.
