ABOUT THE ARTIST

Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys, born Alicia Augello Cook on January 25, 1981 in New York City, is an American singer, songwriter, pianist, and actress. Known for her powerful voice, talent as a pianist, and ability to blend R&B, soul, jazz, and classical music, Alicia Keys has become one of the most respected and influential artists in contemporary music. Throughout her career, she has sold millions of albums worldwide and won numerous awards, including 15 Grammy Awards.

Alicia Keys began playing piano at the age of seven, and from an early age showed an extraordinary talent for music. Influenced by greats such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Nina Simone, Keys developed a unique style that combines her classical training with a modern sensibility. She attended the Professional Performing Arts School in Manhattan, where she excelled both academically and musically, and at age 16 was admitted to Columbia University, although she decided to drop out to focus on her musical career.

Alicia Keys' big breakthrough came in 2001 with the release of her debut album, Songs in A Minor. The album was a huge commercial and critical success, selling over 12 million copies worldwide. Songs in A Minor introduced the world to hits like "Fallin'", "A Woman's Worth", and "How Come You Don't Call Me". "Fallin'", in particular, became one of her most iconic songs, topping music charts in several countries and winning three Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year and Best New Artist.

In 2003, Alicia Keys released her second album, The Diary of Alicia Keys, which continued the success of her debut album. The album included hits such as "You Don't Know My Name," "If I Ain't Got You," and "Diary." The Diary of Alicia Keys was critically acclaimed for its emotional depth and Keys' ability to blend musical genres. The album won four more Grammy Awards and solidified her status as one of the leading voices in soul and R&B music.

Throughout the 2000s, Alicia Keys continued to release successful albums, including As I Am (2007), which featured the hit "No One," and The Element of Freedom (2009), which included singles such as "Empire State of Mind (Part II) Broken Down" and "Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart." "No One" became one of the biggest hits of her career, and The Element of Freedom showcased an evolution in her sound, with more pop and electronic influences.

In 2012, Alicia Keys released Girl on Fire, whose self-titled single became an empowerment anthem. The song "Girl on Fire" stood out for its message of strength and resilience, and the album showcased a more confident and experimental Alicia Keys in her musical approach.

Beyond music, Alicia Keys has been involved in numerous humanitarian and philanthropic projects. She is a co-founder of the organization Keep a Child Alive, which provides medication and support to families affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India. Keys has also been an advocate for women's rights and social justice, using her platform to promote positive change.

Throughout her career, Alicia Keys has also ventured into film and television, both as an actress and as a producer. She has played roles in films such as Smokin' Aces (2007) and The Secret Life of Bees (2008), as well as being a coach on the popular television show The Voice.

In 2020, Keys released the album Alicia, which included tracks such as "Underdog" and "Show Me Love." The album was praised by critics for its introspection and maturity, addressing themes such as identity, resilience, and love. Alicia showcased an artist in full possession of her abilities, continuing to evolve and explore new sounds.

With a career marked by musical excellence, innovation, and activism, Alicia Keys is widely considered one of the most talented and influential artists of her generation. Her ability to combine raw emotion with polished production and a unique sensitivity for songwriting has secured her a lasting place in music history. Over the years, she has continued to inspire and touch millions of fans worldwide, both through her music and her philanthropic endeavors.
