ABOUT THE ARTIST

Lhasa De Sela

Lhasa de Sela, born September 27, 1972, in Big Indian, New York, and died January 1, 2010, in Montreal, Canada, was a Mexican-American singer and songwriter, widely recognized for the emotional depth of her performances and her ability to cross cultures and musical styles. With an unmistakable voice and a deeply personal artistic approach, Lhasa left an indelible mark on world music.

Born to a Mexican father and an American mother, Lhasa grew up in a nomadic family, traveling between the United States and Mexico. This life experience influenced her music, which frequently blended elements of Latin, folk, blues, and world music, creating a unique and timeless style. Fluent in English, Spanish, and French, Lhasa sang with an authenticity that touched hearts in any language.

Her debut album, La Llorona (1997), was widely acclaimed by critics. Inspired by Mexican legends and brimming with emotion, the album featured songs like "De Cara a la Pared" and "El Desierto," which quickly made her a cult figure on the international music scene. The fusion of melancholy and intensity in her performances set her apart as one of the most original voices of her generation.

Her second album, The Living Road (2003), was an even more ambitious work, featuring songs in English, Spanish, and French. Tracks like "Con Toda Palabra" and "Anywhere on This Road" solidified her place as a global artist, transcending genres and borders. This album received praise for its sophisticated production and deeply poetic lyrics.

Her third and final album, Lhasa (2009), was a more introspective and minimalist project, reflecting a more mature and serene phase of her artistic life. The album was released shortly before her untimely death at age 37 from breast cancer. Despite the tragedy, Lhasa's legacy remains alive, with her music continuing to inspire audiences and artists worldwide.

Lhasa de Sela is remembered as one of the most unique and moving artists of her time. Her music, rich in beauty and honesty, remains a testament to her ability to connect the intimate and the universal, touching the soul of the listener.
