ABOUT THE ARTIST

Iggy Pop

Iggy Pop, born James Newell Osterberg Jr. on April 21, 1947 in Muskegon, Michigan, is one of rock's most iconic and influential figures. Known as the "Godfather of Punk", Iggy Pop is celebrated for his raw energy, intense live performances and his fundamental contribution to the development of punk rock and alternative rock. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Iggy Pop has been an unstoppable force in music, defying convention and influencing countless generations of musicians.

Iggy Pop began his musical career in the late 1960s as the lead singer of the band The Stooges, formed in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1967. The Stooges became known for their aggressive, stripped-down sound, which combined elements of rock, blues, and psychedelic, and for Iggy's incendiary performances, which often included self-destructive behavior, such as rolling on shards of glass and interacting provocatively with the audience. The band's debut album, The Stooges (1969), produced by John Cale of the Velvet Underground, was a precursor to punk rock and included songs that became classics, such as "I want to Be Your Dog" and "1969".

In 1970, The Stooges released Fun House, an album that continues to be celebrated as a masterpiece of visceral rock. Fun House was characterized by a frenetic energy and a fusion of rock with elements of free jazz, highlighting tracks such as "Down on the Street" and "T.V. Eye". Despite being critically acclaimed, the Stooges' early albums were not immediately commercially successful, and the band disbanded in 1971 due to drug problems and internal strife.

However, Iggy Pop returned to the music scene with Raw Power (1973), the third album by the Stooges, now renamed Iggy and the Stooges. Produced by David Bowie, Raw Power is often cited as one of punk rock's most influential albums, with tracks such as "Search and Destroy" and "Gimme Danger" becoming anthems for future punk and metal movements. Nevertheless, the band disintegrated again shortly thereafter, due to drug problems and declining popularity.

In the following years, Iggy Pop began a solo career that consolidated him as a central figure in rock. His partnership with David Bowie was particularly fruitful, resulting in iconic albums such as The Idiot and Lust for Life, both released in 1977. The Idiot marked a change in Iggy's sound, with a darker sound and influences from krautrock and electronic music, while Lust for Life brought more energetic and accessible tracks, including the title track "Lust for Life" and "The Passenger", which became some of the biggest hits of his career.

Over the next few decades, Iggy Pop continued to release albums and tour, maintaining his reputation as an energetic and unpredictable performer. Albums such as Blah Blah Blah (1986), which included the hit "Real Wild Child", and Brick by Brick (1990), with the hit "Candy", showed Iggy's ability to adapt to different musical eras, without ever losing his rebellious essence.

Iggy Pop is also known for his cultural influence and his impact on music and art. He is often cited as one of the main influences for the punk movement, having inspired bands such as the Sex Pistols, The Ramones, and many others. In addition to music, Iggy has also starred in several films, including Cry-Baby (1990), Dead Man (1995), and Coffee and Cigarettes (2003), where he showed his versatility as an artist.

In 2016, Iggy Pop released Post Pop Depression, a collaborative album with Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age. This album was critically acclaimed and considered one of the best of his recent career, with a sound that revisits the raw intensity of his early works. Post Pop Depression was followed by a tour that was widely praised, standing out for Iggy's continued vitality even after so many years of career.

With a career that continues to inspire and influence musicians and fans around the world, Iggy Pop remains one of rock's most enduring and authentic figures. His indomitable energy, his willingness to challenge norms, and his unwavering dedication to his art have secured him a place in the pantheon of great music icons.
