ABOUT THE ARTIST

Tool

Tool is an American progressive rock and alternative metal band formed in 1990 in Los Angeles, California. The band consists of Maynard James Keenan (lead vocals), Adam Jones (guitarist), Justin Chancellor (bassist, who joined the band in 1995) and Danny Carey (drums). Known for their complex and atmospheric music, introspective and philosophical lyrics, and innovative approach to visual art, Tool has become one of the most respected and influential bands in the world of rock and metal.

The band began to gain recognition with the release of their first EP, Opiate, in 1992. This early work featured an aggressive and straightforward sound, with metal and punk influences, and served as a harbinger of what was to follow. However, it was with the release of his first full-length album, Undertow, in 1993, that Tool really began to make a name for himself in the music scene. Undertow was widely acclaimed by critics and included singles such as "Sober" and "Prison Sex," which helped the band gain a dedicated fan base and break onto the mainstream rock charts.

In 1996, Tool released Ænima, an album that marked a significant shift in the band's sound, incorporating more elements of progressive rock and musical experimentation. The album was a huge success, both commercially and critically, and is often cited as one of the best rock albums of the '90s. Tracks such as "Stinkfist", "H." and "Ænema" stood out for their musical complexity and lyrics that addressed themes of philosophy, psychology and spirituality. Ænima also received a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance, cementing the band's position as an innovative force in the world of rock.

After Ænima, the band faced legal and personal challenges that resulted in an extended hiatus, but returned in 2001 with the release of Lateralus. This album further elevated the band's musical and conceptual ambition, blending compound tempos, polyrhythms and complex song structures. Lateralus is considered by many fans and critics to be the highlight of Tool's career, with tracks such as "Schism", "Parabola" and the title track receiving praise for their innovation and depth. Lateralus debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 charts and received a Grammy Award for the track "Schism."

Tool continued to explore complex musical territories with the release of 10,000 Days in 2006. This album kept the focus on spiritual and philosophical themes, with rich production and meticulous attention to detail. Tracks like "Vicarious," "The Pot," and "Right in Two" showed the band pushing the boundaries of what progressive rock could achieve even further. 10,000 Days was another commercial success, debuting at the top of the charts and receiving praise for its emotional and musical depth.

After 10,000 Days, the band went on another long hiatus, during which the members of the group focused on side projects and personal life. Tool has remained silent for over a decade, generating enormous anticipation among fans and critics alike. Finally, in 2019, the band released Fear Inoculum, one of the most anticipated albums in rock history. The album was widely acclaimed for its musical and conceptual maturity, with long and complex tracks that explored themes of aging, mortality, and spiritual evolution. Fear Inoculum debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 and received praise for its artistic ambition and innovation.

Tool is known not only for its music but also for its visual art, which plays a crucial role in the band's identity. From artistically crafted music videos to album covers and concert visuals, the band has always placed a strong emphasis on the visual experience as an extension of their music. Adam Jones, the band's guitarist, is also an accomplished visual artist and has been primarily responsible for the development of Tool's unique visual aesthetic.

With a career that spans more than three decades, Tool remains one of the most innovative and influential bands in rock and metal. Their challenging music, deep lyrics, and dedication to visual art have earned them a dedicated fan base and a prominent place in contemporary music history. Tool continues to inspire and challenge listeners and musicians alike, maintaining an artistic integrity that is rare in the music industry.
