ABOUT THE ARTIST

Temples

Temples is a British psychedelic rock band formed in 2012 in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England. The group consists of James Bagshaw (vocals and guitar), Tom Walmsley (bass), Adam Smith (keyboards and guitar), and Rens Ottink (drums). Known for their sound that blends elements of 60s and 70s psychedelic rock with a modern and vibrant production, Temples quickly emerged as one of the most prominent bands of the new wave of psychedelic rock. The band is recognized for its catchy melodies, ethereal harmonies, and rich sonic arrangements, which evoke both nostalgia and innovation.

The band began as a studio project between James Bagshaw and Tom Walmsley, who initially recorded songs in Bagshaw's bedroom and released them online. These early recordings caught the attention of record labels and critics, leading to the full formation of the band and the release of their debut single, "Shelter Song," in 2013. The song, with its psychedelic sound and catchy melody, quickly became a hit and helped establish Temples as a new force in the indie scene.

The band's debut album, Sun Structures (2014), was met with critical acclaim and achieved commercial success, reaching the top 10 of the UK charts. Sun Structures is an album distinguished by its rich sonic tapestry, where reverberating guitars, pulsating bass lines, and celestial vocal harmonies combine to create a sound that is both vintage and contemporary. Songs like "Keep in the Dark" and "Mesmerise" stood out for their melodic complexity and creative use of studio production. The album was described by many as one of the best debuts of the year and cemented Temples as leaders of the psychedelic revival.

In 2017, Temples released their second album, Volcano. This album marked an evolution in the band's sound, incorporating more electronic elements and experimenting with synthesizers and complex sound textures. Volcano was well-received, with critics praising the band for not simply repeating the formula of their first album, but rather expanding their musical horizons. Tracks like "Certainty" and "Strange or Be Forgotten" showcase this new approach, maintaining the psychedelic essence while exploring new sonic territories.

The band's third studio album, Hot Motion, was released in 2019 and continued Temples' trajectory of innovation. This album brought back a more organic and warm approach, with a renewed emphasis on guitars and engaging melodic structures. Hot Motion was praised for its cohesion and the band's ability to create a sound that, while anchored in the past, sounds fresh and relevant in the contemporary context.

The Temples are known for their dynamic live performances, where their psychedelic sound comes alive with energy and intensity. The band has been a highlight at music festivals worldwide, earning a reputation for captivating performances that transport audiences to an immersive sonic experience.

With a career that, despite being relatively short, is already marked by constant evolution and a commitment to innovation within the psychedelic genre, Temples remains one of the most interesting and creative bands in current British music. They maintain a dedicated fanbase and continue to explore new musical directions, keeping the flame of psychedelic rock alive with a modern and vibrant touch.
