ABOUT THE ARTIST

Motörhead

Motörhead is a British rock band formed in 1975 in London, England, by bassist, vocalist and main songwriter Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister. The band is widely recognized as one of the most influential in the development of heavy metal and punk rock, known for their characteristically fast and aggressive sound, which combines elements of classic rock and roll with the intensity of metal.

Lemmy Kilmister, before forming Motörhead, already had a career in music, having been a member of the space rock band Hawkwind. After being fired from Hawkwind, Lemmy decided to create a band that combined the power and attitude of rock with the speed and simplicity of punk. Together with guitarist Larry Wallis and drummer Lucas Fox, Lemmy formed Motörhead, a name inspired by an American slang term for "speed freak". Soon after, Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor replaced Lucas Fox on drums, and the band began to create the sound for which they would become world-renowned.

The band's eponymous debut album, Motörhead (1977), was the first to capture the raw energy and simplicity of the band's sound. However, it was with the album Overkill (1979) that Motörhead really began to define his style, characterized by fast drums, heavy riffs and Lemmy's raspy, unmistakable voice. The album was followed by Bomber (1979) and soon after Ace of Spades (1980), which became one of the band's most iconic albums. The title track "Ace of Spades" is often cited as one of the greatest rock songs of all time, and has become the band's definitive anthem.

During the 1980s, Motörhead continued to release acclaimed albums such as Iron Fist (1982) and Another Perfect Day (1983). Despite several lineup changes, with guitarists such as "Fast" Eddie Clarke and Brian "Robbo" Robertson passing through the band, Lemmy maintained Motörhead's original vision, focused on creating fast, loud, and relentless music.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Motörhead continued to release albums that retained the essence of the band's sound, such as Bastards (1993), Sacrifice (1995), Inferno (2004), and The Wörld Is Yours (2010). The band also maintained a steady presence on stage, with incessant touring that captivated fans around the world. Motörhead's combination of heavy metal, rock and roll, and punk rock influenced a wide range of bands and musicians, cementing the band's legacy as one of the most important in rock history.

Lemmy Kilmister, as the band's central figure, became a rock legend, known as much for his music as for his hedonistic lifestyle and fearless attitude. He continued to lead the band until his death in December 2015. The band's last studio album, Bad Magic (2015), was released just months before Lemmy's passing, and is considered a fitting epitaph for a remarkable career.

Motörhead left a lasting legacy in the music world, with a discography spanning four decades and an influence that spans numerous musical genres. The band is remembered for its no-compromise approach to rock and metal, and the cultural impact it has had throughout its long career.
