ABOUT THE ARTIST

Etta James

Etta James, born Jamesetta Hawkins on January 25, 1938, in Los Angeles, California, and died on January 20, 2012, in Riverside, California, was an American singer widely recognized as one of the greatest voices in blues, soul, R&B, and gospel. With a career that spanned more than five decades, Etta has become an icon of American music, known for her intense emotional delivery and versatility in moving between musical genres.

Etta began singing as a child in church choirs, showing an extraordinary talent from an early age. Her professional career began in the 50s, when she was discovered by musician Johnny Otis. In 1955, he released his first hit, "The Wallflower" (Dance with Me, Henry), which quickly drew attention for its blend of youthful energy and musical sensibility.

The real recognition came with the contract signed with Chess Records, in the early 60s. It was there that Etta recorded some of her most iconic songs, including "At Last", "I'd Rather Go Blind" and "All I Could Do Was Cry". These songs have become timeless classics, standing out for the combination of their powerful voice with deeply emotional lyrics and sophisticated arrangements.

Etta James' versatility has allowed her to explore a wide range of styles throughout her career, from soul ballads to intense blues and sweeping gospel numbers. Despite facing personal challenges, including battles with addictions, Etta never lost her passion for music and continued to perform and record well into her later years.

Throughout her career, Etta has received numerous awards, including six Grammy Awards, 17 Blues Music Awards, and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. His impact on music was so great that it influenced generations of artists, from Aretha Franklin to Adele, cementing his status as one of the most important figures in R&B and blues history.

Etta James will always be remembered as a singer who channeled her entire life – triumphs and adversity – into her art, creating music that continues to resonate with listeners around the world. His unique voice, rich in passion and emotion, has left a legacy that transcends time and secures his place as a true legend of music.
