ABOUT THE ARTIST

Maria Callas

Maria Callas, born on December 2, 1923 in New York, was one of the most celebrated sopranos of all time, known as much for her extraordinary voice as for her dramatic intensity and stage presence. Famous for her ability to play a wide range of roles, from the most lyrical to the most dramatic, Callas is often referred to as "La Divina" due to her influence and importance in the world of opera. Her career, marked by artistic triumphs and a tumultuous personal life, has made her an iconic figure not only in classical music, but also in popular culture.

Daughter of Greek parents, Maria Callas moved to Athens with her mother as a child, where she began her singing studies. Under the guidance of Elvira de Hidalgo, a famous Spanish soprano, Callas developed her vocal technique and began to build her career. In 1941, he made his debut at the Greek National Opera, and quickly drew attention for his exceptional talent.

The real beginning of Callas's international career came in 1947, when she was invited to replace another singer in the role of La Gioconda at the Verona Arena. Her performance was a great success and opened the door to a series of performances in the most prestigious opera houses in the world. During the 1950s, Callas became the main star of La Scala in Milan, where she collaborated with director Luchino Visconti and conductor Tullio Serafin, who helped shape her unique interpretive style.

Maria Callas was known for her ability to bring emotional and dramatic depth to her performances, which made her stand out among her contemporaries. She was able to combine rigorous vocal technique with intense expressiveness, which allowed her to explore the darker and more complex aspects of the characters she played. His repertoire was vast and included operas by composers such as Verdi, Puccini, Bellini and Rossini. Callas was particularly acclaimed for her roles in Norma, La Traviata, Tosca, and Lucia di Lammermoor.

His unique and unmistakable voice was characterized by a rich timbre, a wide vocal range, and a clear and precise ability to articulate. Despite some criticism about the early wear and tear of her voice, possibly due to the rigorous regimen of performances and recordings, Callas has managed to maintain a high artistic level throughout her career.

Maria Callas' personal life was also the subject of intense media attention. Her romantic relationship with Greek tycoon Aristotle Onassis, which began in the 1950s, was widely publicized and involved much controversy, especially after Onassis ended the relationship to marry Jacqueline Kennedy, the widow of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.

In the last years of her career, Callas began to move away from live performances, with her last stage performance taking place in 1965. She began to dedicate herself more to recording and teaching, but her legacy as an opera performer was already solidified. Her ability to combine technique, emotion and an unparalleled stage presence has made her one of the most influential figures in the history of opera.

Maria Callas died on September 16, 1977, in Paris, at the age of 53, leaving a lasting legacy in classical music. His recordings continue to be a reference for singers and opera lovers around the world, and his life and career remain an example of artistic dedication and passion. Callas was not just an opera singer; She was a true artist who redefined the standards of performance and interpretation, and her impact is still felt decades after her death.
