ABOUT THE ARTIST

UHF

UHF is one of the most iconic and pioneering Portuguese rock bands, known for being one of the founding groups of the rock movement in Portugal in the 1980s. Formed in Almada in 1978, the band is led by vocalist and guitarist António Manuel Ribeiro, who is also the main composer of their songs. Throughout more than four decades of career, UHF has become a reference in the Portuguese music scene, leaving a significant legacy with numerous hits that have marked generations.

The initial lineup of UHF included António Manuel Ribeiro, Carlos Peres (bass), Américo Manuel (drums), and Renato Gomes (guitar). Inspired by the punk rock movement and the garage rock sound emerging in the United Kingdom and the United States, UHF began to create a unique sound that combined lyrics in Portuguese with the raw and intense energy of rock.

The band's first major success came with the release of the single "Cavalos de Corrida" in 1980. The song became an instant anthem and is widely considered one of the first great Portuguese rock songs. With powerful lyrics and infectious energy, "Cavalos de Corrida" captured the public's attention and established UHF as a dominant force in Portuguese music.

In 1981, UHF released their first album, À Flor da Pele, which consolidated the band's success and included other classics such as "Rua do Carmo" and "Sou Benfica." This album is often cited as a landmark in the history of Portuguese rock, introducing a new sound and attitude that distanced itself from the popular music of the time.

The band continued to produce successful albums throughout the 1980s, such as Persona Non Grata (1982), which featured songs like "Matas-me Com o Teu Olhar" and "Noite Dentro." António Manuel Ribeiro's lyrics, often laden with social criticism and personal introspection, combined with the band's distinctive rock sound, helped cement their position as one of Portugal's most respected bands.

Over the years, UHF has undergone several lineup changes, but António Manuel Ribeiro has always remained the creative force and face of the band. His unwavering dedication to the music and the message of UHF has ensured that the band has remained relevant, despite changes in the music industry and public tastes.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, UHF continued to release albums and tour, maintaining a loyal fanbase. Albums such as Santa Loucura (1993) and 69 Stereo (1996) demonstrated the band's ability to evolve and continue creating music that resonated with audiences. In 1998, the band celebrated 20 years in the business with the album Cheio.

One of the most remarkable aspects of UHF's career is its longevity and ability to remain active and creative for over four decades. In 2010, they released the album Porquê?, which included the single "Vernáculo (para um homem comum)," further proof of the band's continued relevance in Portuguese music.

In 2018, the band celebrated 40 years of their career with a national tour, revisiting their greatest hits and presenting new songs, showing that UHF's creative flame continues to burn brightly. The celebration also included the release of the album Minha Geração (My Generation), which once again underscored the band's ability to connect with audiences of various generations.

UHF is often credited with paving the way for rock in Portuguese, inspiring countless bands that came after them. Their contribution to Portuguese music is undeniable, and their influence can be felt across generations of musicians who followed them.

With a career rich in successes and an unwavering dedication to music and their fans, UHF remains one of the most important and enduring bands in Portuguese rock. The band's legacy is proof of rock's power to express deep feelings, question society, and unite people through music.
