ABOUT THE ARTIST

Iced Earth

Iced Earth is an American heavy metal band formed in 1985 in Tampa, Florida, by guitarist and main songwriter Jon Schaffer. The band is known for its sound that combines elements of power metal, thrash metal, and progressive metal, with lyrical themes ranging from history and mythology to fantasy and politics.

The band's debut album, Iced Earth (1990), introduced the world to the band's signature sound, marked by heavy riffs and powerful melodies. However, it was with the release of albums such as Night of the Stormrider (1991) and Burnt Offerings (1995) that the band began to gain more notoriety. Burnt Offerings in particular is often cited as one of the band's heaviest and darkest albums, reflecting a difficult period in Schaffer's life.

In 1996, Iced Earth released The Dark Saga, a concept album inspired by the story of the comic book character Spawn, which marked a shift to a more melodic and accessible sound. This album helped the band expand their fan base. Another important album in the band's career is Something Wicked This Way Comes (1998), which introduced the "Something Wicked" saga, a narrative that Schaffer would expand on subsequent albums.

Over the years, Iced Earth has gone through several lineup changes, especially with regard to vocalists. Vocalists such as Matt Barlow, Tim "Ripper" Owens (ex-Judas Priest), and Stu Block played important roles in the evolution of the band's sound. Matt Barlow, in particular, is often associated with the band's most iconic period, and his powerful and emotional voice helped define classic albums such as Alive in Athens (1999) and Horror Show (2001).

In 2007, the band released Framing Armageddon, which marked the beginning of the second part of the "Something Wicked" saga, an epic narrative that explores themes of conspiracy and apocalyptic warfare. Dystopia (2011) was another significant release, reflecting contemporary influences and reinforcing the band's position as a major force in global metal.

Despite a long and productive career, Iced Earth has faced significant challenges, including the arrest of Jon Schaffer in 2021 due to his involvement in the January 6 events at the United States Capitol, which led to the departure of several band members and a pause in the group's activities.

Iced Earth is a band that has left an indelible mark on the world of heavy metal, known for their dedication to the genre and the creation of music that combines intensity with epic narratives. The band continues to have a loyal fan base, even as it faces challenges and uncertainty regarding the future.
