Count Basie

Count Basie, nascido William James Basie a 21 de agosto de 1904, em Red Bank, Nova Jérsia, e falecido a 26 de abril de 1984, em Hollywood, Flórida, foi um pianista, compositor e líder de banda norte-americano, amplamente reconhecido como uma das figuras mais influentes da história do jazz. Com a sua lendária Count Basie Orchestra, ele ajudou a definir o som do swing e estabeleceu novos padrões de sofisticação e elegância na música orquestral de jazz.

Basie começou a sua carreira musical como organista em cinemas e depois como pianista em pequenas bandas. No início dos anos 30, juntou-se à Blue Devils, liderada por Bennie Moten, uma das bandas mais proeminentes de Kansas City. Após a morte de Moten, em 1935, Basie formou a sua própria orquestra, que rapidamente ganhou notoriedade pela sua abordagem rítmica inovadora, conhecida como "Kansas City swing", e pela sua capacidade de improvisação.
