ABOUT THE ARTIST

Khruangbin

Khruangbin is an American band formed in 2009 in Houston, Texas, known for their unique blend of musical genres that includes funk, soul, psychedelic rock, dub, and world music influences, especially from Southeast Asia and the Middle East. The name "Khruangbin" means "plane" or "flying machine" in Thai, reflecting the band's admiration for international music and their desire to create a sound without borders.

The band consists of three main members: Laura Lee (bassist), Mark Speer (guitarist) and Donald "DJ" Johnson (drums). From the beginning, Khruangbin stood out for his instrumental, atmospheric and psychedelic sound, with smooth bass lines, vibrant guitars and relaxing beats, often influenced by genres such as surf rock and Thai funk from the 60s and 70s.

Their first studio album, The Universe Smiles Upon You (2015), was heavily influenced by Southeast Asian music, in particular Thai funk, and marked their debut to great critical acclaim. In 2018, they released the album Con Todo El Mundo, which further expanded their sound, incorporating influences from Middle Eastern and Latin American music, with tracks such as "Maria También" and "Evan Finds the Third Room" gaining popularity.

Khruangbin is widely recognized for its ability to create engaging musical atmospheres without the predominant use of lyrics, being mostly an instrumental band. However, in more recent collaborations, such as the album Texas Sun (2020) with Leon Bridges, the band has integrated more vocal elements, broadening their appeal. This collaboration blended Khruangbin's laid-back groove with Bridges' R&B soul, creating a unique fusion.

The band's visual style, especially in their live concerts, also stands out, with bassist Laura Lee known for her colorful costumes and iconic haircuts, and an enigmatic stage presence that complements the band's hypnotic music.

Khruangbin continues to be one of the most innovative bands and recognized for their ability to blend global influences, creating a sound that is both unique and universal, becoming a striking presence in the contemporary music scene.
