ABOUT THE ARTIST

Chico Buarque

Francisco Buarque de Hollanda, better known as Chico Buarque, was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1944. A composer, singer, and fiction writer, he is one of the most celebrated and admired artists in the Portuguese language.

He published several plays, including... The Rogue's Opera, and a novel before debuting in the novel genre, in 1991, with Obstacle, for which he received the Jabuti Prize. This was followed by... Benjamin (1995), Budapest (2003) and Spilled Milk (2009), the latter of which were awarded the Jabuti Prize for best novel of the year. The novels that followed were... The German Brother (2014) and These people (2019).

All of his novels are published in Portugal by Companhia das Letras, as well as So Many Words, a book that brings together all of his lyrics accompanied by a biographical portrait written by Humberto Werneck. In 2019, Chico Buarque's literary work was recognized by the Camões Prize, the highest distinction for authors writing in Portuguese.
