ABOUT THE ARTIST

The Streets

The Streets is the stage name of British musician Mike Skinner, a rapper, singer, and producer who emerged in the early 2000s with a style that blends rap, grime, and British garage. Mike Skinner, born on November 27, 1978, in Birmingham, England, is known for his incisive lyrics and narratives about everyday life in the UK, addressing themes such as love, anxiety, parties, and urban culture.

The Streets' debut album, Original Pirate Material (2002), was widely acclaimed by critics and considered a landmark in British music. With tracks like "Has It Come to This?" and "Weak Become Heroes," the album offered an honest and detailed look at urban life, with Skinner delivering his lyrics with an unmistakable British accent and a style that blends spoken word with rap.

The second album, A Grand Don't Come for Free (2004), was equally well-received and is often seen as Skinner's masterpiece. This concept album tells the story of a young man who loses a thousand pounds and the consequences this has on his personal and love life. Singles like "Dry Your Eyes" and "Fit But You Know It" became huge hits and helped solidify The Streets' reputation as one of the most authentic and innovative voices in British rap.

Over the years, The Streets continued to release albums that explored urban life and the emotional complexities of youth, including The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living (2006) and Everything Is Borrowed (2008). Although Mike Skinner announced the end of The Streets in 2011 with the album Computers and Blues, he resumed the project in 2018 with new releases and tours.

The Streets are widely recognized for bringing a fresh voice to British rap, with a style that blends humor, vulnerability, and social commentary. Mike Skinner remains an influential figure in British music, both for his groundbreaking albums and his lyrics that capture the zeitgeist of a generation.
