ABOUT THE ARTIST

Candlemass

Candlemass is a Swedish doom metal band formed in 1984 in Stockholm. Known for being one of the pioneers of the genre and for influencing a generation of metal bands, Candlemass helped define the heavy, atmospheric and dark sound that characterizes doom metal. The band is recognized for its use of slow, heavy riffs, melodic vocals, and lyrics that explore themes of death, suffering, and despair, creating music that is both oppressive and epic.

Their debut album, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus (1986), is widely considered one of the biggest milestones in doom metal. Produced by Lars Göran Petrov and featuring vocalist Messiah Marcolin, the album features legendary tracks such as "Solitude" and "The Well of Souls". With this work, Candlemass established their sonic identity, uniting heavy metal with a more melodic and epic approach, characteristics that would become fundamental in doom metal.

Following the success of Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, the band continued to evolve with the release of Nightfall (1987), which further cemented their position as one of the most influential doom metal bands. Nightfall included tracks such as "The Well of Souls" and "Bewitched", which are still considered some of the best in the band's catalog. The album featured more refined production and a more cohesive sound, while maintaining the density and melancholy that define the band's style.

In the following years, Candlemass underwent several lineup changes, including the departure of Marcolin, but continued to release acclaimed albums such as Ancient Dreams (1988) and Tales of Creation (1989). During the 1990s, the band took a break, but in 2002, Candlemass returned with the album Candlemass (2005), which received critical acclaim and brought back their heavy and atmospheric sound.

Candlemass remains one of metal's most respected bands, with a career full of classic albums that continue to inspire new generations of doom metal fans and musicians alike. The band's legacy is recognized for their ability to create deep and emotive music, while maintaining a loyal fan base and celebrating doom metal's lasting impact on heavy music.
