Black Sabbath is a British rock band formed in 1968 in Birmingham, England, who are widely credited as one of the creators of heavy metal, a genre that revolutionized rock music. The band's original line-up included Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass) and Bill Ward (drums). Black Sabbath's distinctive sound, marked by heavy riffs and a dark atmosphere, was born from blues rock influences, but quickly evolved into something much more powerful and sinister, which would come to define a new musical genre.

The band's debut album, Black Sabbath, released in 1970, is considered by many to be the first heavy metal album in history. The album's release was a revelation to the music world, introducing a sound that was radically different from the softer, more psychedelic rock that dominated the charts at the time. The title track, "Black Sabbath", with its iconic three-note riff, introduced what would become the essence of metal: darkness, intensity and an almost oppressive sense of power. The song's lyrics, inspired by Butler's frightening personal experience, involved themes of occultism and fear, setting the tone for much of the band's subsequent work.Soon after the success of the first album, the band released Paranoid in late 1970. This album not only cemented Black Sabbath's place as heavy metal pioneers, but also produced some of their best-known songs, such as "Iron Man", "War Pigs" and "Paranoid". Paranoid was a commercial success and remains one of the most iconic albums in rock history. "War Pigs," with its critiques of war and militarism, and "Iron Man," with its quasi-mythological narrative, showcased the band's ability to combine powerful music with lyrics of deep meaning.

The following years saw the band release a series of albums that continued to explore and expand the sound they had created. Master of Reality (1971) introduced the heavier, sunken sound, thanks to Tony Iommi's use of lower tuning, which became a signature of the metal sound. This album included tracks such as "Children of the Grave" and "Sweet Leaf", the latter being an ode to cannabis use, which reflected the band's countercultural attitude. Vol. 4 (1972) and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973) followed, both exploring a blend of heaviness, melody, and lyrical complexity that influenced not only heavy metal but also rock in general.

However, the band's success was accompanied by internal difficulties, especially related to drug use and rising tensions between the band members. In 1979, these tensions culminated in the departure of Ozzy Osbourne, who was replaced by Ronnie James Dio, former lead singer of Rainbow. With Dio, the band released Heaven and Hell (1980), which marked a new era for Black Sabbath. This album showed an evolution in the band's sound, with a more melodic and epic approach, while still maintaining the weight that characterized them. "Heaven and Hell" and "Neon Knights" became anthems of the band's new era, and the album was widely acclaimed by critics and fans alike.

The 80s were a period of constant changes in the band's lineup, with several members coming and going. Despite this, the band continued to release albums and tour, albeit with less impact than in the 1970s. During this period, Tony Iommi remained the only constant member, guiding the band through different phases and musical styles.

In the 90s, there were a series of reunions and side projects, culminating in the return of the original line-up in 1997, with the live album Reunion. This reunion revived interest in the band and led to a series of successful tours. In 2013, the band released 13, the first studio album with Ozzy Osbourne on vocals since 1978. The album was well received, reaching number one on the charts in several countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States, and proving that the band still had relevance and drawing power.

In 2017, Black Sabbath officially closed out their activities with the farewell tour "The End", which culminated with a final concert in their hometown of Birmingham. Although the band has since broken up, Black Sabbath's legacy continues to influence bands and musicians around the world. They are often cited as the greatest and most influential heavy metal band of all time, and their music remains a mainstay of the genre.
