ABOUT THE ARTIST

Spinal Tap

Spinal Tap is a fictional heavy metal and hard rock band created by actors and comedians Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer for the 1984 film This Is Spinal Tap. The film, directed by Rob Reiner, is a mockumentary that satirizes rock and heavy metal band culture, especially the extravagances and absurdities of the music industry in the 1970s and 80s.

The fictional band members include David St. Hubbins (played by Michael McKean) as the lead vocalist and guitarist, Nigel Tufnel (played by Christopher Guest) as the lead guitarist, and Derek Smalls (played by Harry Shearer) as the bassist. The band became famous for its exaggerated theatricality and its numerous drummers, who mysteriously die under bizarre circumstances, a recurring joke throughout the film.

This Is Spinal Tap follows the band during a disastrous North American tour as they promote their new album, Smell the Glove. The film presents the band as a caricature of 70s and 80s rock bands, highlighting the vanity, internal rivalries, lack of self-awareness, and comical situations that musicians frequently face. One of the film's most iconic scenes is when Nigel Tufnel shows off his amplifier that "goes up to 11," symbolizing the excess of rock and roll.

Despite being a satire, This Is Spinal Tap was so convincing that many viewers believed the band was real. The film's music was written and performed by the actors themselves, who also played the instruments. Songs like "Big Bottom," "Stonehenge," and "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight" became cult classics, and the band even released albums and toured as if they were a real band.

Over the years, Spinal Tap has become a pop culture reference and is widely recognized as one of the best satires of the rock world. The expression "Spinal Tap moment" is often used to describe ridiculous or exaggerated situations in the song. The fictional band has released several albums over the years, including Break Like the Wind (1992) and Back from the Dead (2009), keeping the parody of the rock scene alive.

The popularity and cultural impact of Spinal Tap transcended the original film, becoming an iconic part of rock history, even if in a fictional form. The band is a symbol of intelligent humor and biting satire, showing how rock can be both grandiose and absurdly comical.
