ABOUT THE ARTIST

Sting

Sting, whose real name is Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, is one of the most respected and influential musicians in the world, known both for his work as the lead singer and bassist of the band The Police, and for his successful solo career. Born on October 2, 1951 in Wallsend, England, Sting stood out for his ability to combine different musical genres, such as rock, jazz, reggae, and classical music, with intelligent and often poetic lyrics.

Sting began his musical career in the 1970s, playing in various jazz bands before forming The Police in 1977 with guitarist Andy Summers and drummer Stewart Copeland. The Police quickly became one of the most important bands of the post-punk and new wave era, thanks to their unique blend of rock, reggae, and punk. The band's success was immediate, with the release of iconic albums such as Outlandos d'Amour (1978), which included hits such as "Roxanne" and "Can't Stand Losing You."

In the following years, The Police continued to release a string of successful albums, such as Reggatta de Blanc (1979), Zenyatta Mondatta (1980), and Ghost in the Machine (1981). However, it was the album Synchronicity (1983) that catapulted the band to the top of the international charts, with singles such as "Every Breath You Take," "King of Pain," and "Wrapped Around Your Finger." "Every Breath You Take," in particular, became one of the most iconic songs of the 1980s, staying at the top of the charts for several weeks and winning several awards, including the Grammy for Song of the Year.

Despite the huge success of The Police, tensions between the band members led to their breakup in 1984. Sting, however, quickly embarked on a solo career, releasing his debut album The Dream of the Blue Turtles in 1985. This album was a commercial and critical success, standing out for its fusion of rock, jazz, and classical elements. The album included hits such as "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free," "Russians," and "Fortress Around Your Heart." Sting also demonstrated his talent as a lyricist, addressing political and social issues with a depth that would continue to characterize his career.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Sting continued to release acclaimed albums, including... Nothing Like the Sun (1987), which was inspired by his mother's death and included hits such as "Englishman in New York" and "Fragile," and Ten Summoner's Tales (1993), which spawned hits such as "Fields of Gold" and "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You." These albums cemented Sting's reputation as a solo artist of enormous talent, able to explore a wide range of musical styles while maintaining lyrical and emotional coherence.

Sting also stood out for his commitment to social and environmental causes. He was one of the founders of the Rainforest Foundation, an organization dedicated to the protection of tropical forests and the rights of indigenous communities. In addition, Sting has used his music to address global issues such as war, poverty, and human rights, showing an ongoing concern for the state of the world.

In the 2000s and 2010s, Sting continued to explore new musical directions. He has released albums such as Songs from the Labyrinth (2006), where he performed music by Renaissance composer John Dowland, and Symphonicities (2010), where he reinterpreted his songs with a symphony orchestra. In 2016, he released the album 57th & 9th, which marked a return to more straightforward rock, and in 2018, he collaborated with reggae singer Shaggy on the album 44/876, which won the Grammy for Best Reggae Album.

In 2019, Sting released My Songs, an album that revisits some of the biggest hits of his career, both solo and with The Police, reinterpreting them in new ways. His ability to reimagine his own repertoire is a testament to his creativity and desire to keep his music alive and relevant for different generations.

Sting is widely recognized as one of the greatest musicians of his generation, with a career marked by innovation, artistic integrity, and an unwavering commitment to musical excellence. He has won numerous awards, including 17 Grammy Awards, and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Police. His music continues to be a fixture on radio and playlists around the world, and he remains an influential figure in both music and popular culture.

With a career spanning several decades and a discography that includes some of the greatest hits in modern music, Sting remains one of the most respected and admired artists in contemporary music. His ability to combine sophisticated music with deep and emotionally resonant lyrics has secured him a lasting place in music history.
