ABOUT THE ARTIST

Vangelis

Vangelis, born Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou on March 29, 1943, in Agria, Greece, was a world-renowned composer and musician, widely recognized for his contributions to electronic music, new age and film scores. He passed away on May 17, 2022. Vangelis is perhaps most famous for his iconic soundtracks for films such as Chariots of Fire (1981) and Blade Runner (1982), both of which are considered milestones in the history of film music.

Vangelis began his musical career in the 1960s, founding the progressive rock band Aphrodite's Child, which had great success in Europe. However, it was as a composer of electronic music that he became an influential figure in contemporary music. His style is characterized by extensive use of synthesizers and electronic instruments, creating rich and evocative soundscapes that often blend elements of classical music, jazz, and rock.

His work on Chariots of Fire brought him international recognition, winning the Academy Award for Best Original Score. The main theme of the film became a worldwide success, and is still today one of the most recognizable compositions associated with the spirit of overcoming and triumph.

Another of his most famous works is the soundtrack to the film Blade Runner, which, with its futuristic and darkly beautiful atmosphere, helped set the tone of the film and became a reference in the science fiction genre. Vangelis' music in Blade Runner is widely praised for its ability to capture the dystopian and melancholic essence of the film.

In addition to film, Vangelis has composed music for a wide variety of projects, including collaborations with artists such as Jon Anderson, lead singer of Yes, with whom he has released several albums under the name Jon & Vangelis. He has also composed works for theater, documentaries, and special events, including the music for NASA's mission to Mars.

Vangelis is remembered as one of the pioneers of electronic music, whose work transcended genres and influenced generations of musicians and composers. His music continues to be celebrated for its beauty, innovation, and ability to evoke deep and universal emotions.
