ABOUT THE ARTIST

Al Green

Al Green is one of the most iconic and influential singers in soul and R&B music, born on April 13, 1946, in Forrest City, Arkansas, USA. Known for his smooth and emotional voice, Green is often referred to as "The Reverend" or "The Prince of Soul" due to his lasting impact on the genre and his later transition to gospel music.

Al Green began his musical career in the late 1960s, but it was in the 1970s that he achieved commercial and critical success. Working with producer Willie Mitchell at Hi Records, Green released a series of classic albums that defined the soul music of the time. Among his greatest hits are "Let's Stay Together," "Tired of Being Alone," "I'm Still in Love with You," and "Love and Happiness." These songs are marked by the use of smooth string arrangements, sensual rhythms, and a vocal interpretation that combines vulnerability with deep emotion.

In 1974, after a series of dramatic personal events, including an incident in which he was attacked by his then-girlfriend, who later committed suicide, Green underwent a spiritual transformation and decided to dedicate himself to gospel music. He became a pastor and began recording gospel albums, eventually stepping away from the secular mainstream for a time.

Despite his shift to religious music, Al Green continues to be celebrated for his work in soul and R&B, and his influence can be seen in countless artists who cite him as a major inspiration. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, and his music remains a point of reference for generations of singers and musicians.

Today, Al Green is recognized both for his work as a soul artist and for his dedication to gospel music, having left a legacy that transcends genres and generations, cementing his place as one of the greatest voices in popular music.
